I learned a little about NCI projects recently. Currently I am running one of them, but I know there are others. I am opening up this to try and get a comprehensive list on them and what they do.

First off for those who do not know, and NCI runs at the same time other projects do and does not count against a CPU since it runs so small of a footprint it doesn't need a full CPU. So it doesn't take much away from your real crunching and you get points.

There are both BOINC and non-BOINC NCI projects. I currently only know of two that run correctly and one that does not (but is currently in hibernation).

BOINC:
WUProp - WUProp@home is a non-intensive project that uses Internet-connected computers to collect workunits properties of BOINC projects such as computation time, memory requirements, checkpointing interval or report limit. You can participate by downloading and running a free program on your computer.

I run WUProp and it runs very quietly even on my Android phone. I have not seen it interfere with anything.

OProject - The main idea of this project is the analysis of algorithms. ALX is the application - Artificial Intelligence, it never worked NCI correctly unless you used an anonymous platform. Currently in hibernation.

I had tried to run this but I never used an anonymous platform so it kept taking regular cycles away. They shut it down because it was a dummy program (kind of like Pirates). Unsure of a return with real data.

Non-BOINC
Dimes - DIMES is a distributed scientific research project, aimed to study the structure and topology of the Internet, with the help of a volunteer community.

I had run Dimes in the past, but not for over a year. Last project update on the home page is May 2012. So it seems to be fairly status quo. Their forums talk about a new 64 bit Beta program released in 2013.

What other NCI projects are out there? I have heard rumors of others and it would be nice to have a list. Has anyone run multiple NCI projects? Do they play nice together? Any other suggestions about them that could help in knowing how to run them.

I run FREEHal, but OProject was not on my list of Non-CPU-Intensive Projects...
I only show (BOINC) as FREEHal and WUProp

Surveill@Home
http://surveill.dei.uc.pt/surveill/ Unsure if it is a reputable Project

Radioactive@Home
http://radioactiveathome.org/boinc/ Requires Hardware

Quake Catcher Network
http://qcn.stanford.edu/qcnalpha/ Requires Hardware

NON-BOINC

The new Folding@Home has a 'Slider' to adjust CPU loads WAY down...

I had Dimes running on all my shrubbers but over time it seems to succumb to JavaRE problems. Down to 2 now. Rolling Eyes

OProject seems to have finished their NCI tasks, I think they were just alpha test WUs. New ones I shrubbed use a full core.

You could include Pirates, not technically NCI as I recall, but you only get a few minutes work per hour when available.

OK linked up to WUProp...

Also giving Dimes another shot with the new 64 bit client. Had to install 64 bit Java. (Makes me wonder, does DDM use 32 or 64 bit java?) Can't connect to register Dimes at the moment. Their main web page has a query error, can't find where to log in.

My Dimes clients have been unable to connect to the server for a week or so. Confused

I thought Dimes used 32-bit Java and DDM used 64-bit Java.

I don't know, but when Java updates caused DDM compute errors, it wasn't fixed until I re-installed the 64-bit Java. Confused

If I read Java's website, it's based on the Web Browser you have installed. So it may require 64 bit if it's as tied to the browser as it says. So there must be some hook in Java. Since my browser is 32 bit version of Firefox and Chrome, I have no need for the 64 bit.

Interesting info from the Dimes map of active agents - the U.S. has over 150 active clients, and such far flung regions such as New Zealand with 11, Argentina with 3, Norway with 28, and Russia with 8 clients. However except for 2 in Tunisia, Africa has ZERO active agents? Do we know ANYONE in South Africa who could fire up Dimes and monitor traffic across the entire continent? India has only 1? We could also use help from Iceland, Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela, and others to round out the map...

WUProp@Home Application updated
I made some changes to the application in order to implement a badge. The badge will be assigned based on the number of applications for which you have returned data and the number of hours run on these applications.
I will post more informations in a few days.

That's the most inscrutable badge system I've seen to date. Confused

Wow, inscrutable indeed.... Now how do I update my badge photo below to see what I've got? I've forgotten that link.

Laughing that I thought this was news, but was posted 6 months ago.

Here is your link sir droid

http://signature.statseb.fr/

If you want to see how many hours you have logged per project use the account login on the wuprop site and it will tell you on the right side of your account page all that data. It will also show if you have a badge

The sig isn't in a format our forum can display using img /img, you have to save it to a photo hosting site and link to that. you'll need to update it manually. Sad

Testing. I think I updated it with an easy 27 step process. Confused Don't see any WU Prop badges tho... Whut the hey - I have over 3K hours on Asteroids and nearly that many on Cosmo, but no steekink badges earned?
#evil

Oh I see now, you have to crunch 20 applications to earn the first star. WU Props is aware of only 17. Ha-Rumph! Mad

I have the lowest rank badge. These times don't look right, I've spent a lot more time on PrimeGrid than Convector. Confused

I still have hrs pending on Seti? I can't even remember the last time I shrubbed Seti. Confused

I just joined WU Prop... It will be many, many moons before I get a badge of any sort. They sent me a notice that said they don't recognize my GPU and won't be counting any work done by it (AMD-ATI Radeon 4800 series, double precision) but would maybe someday include it.
Badges ??? Phaw! I don't need no stinking badges !!!
But a few free points is nice, so I guess I'll let it run. Razz

Sir Gem - regarding the statesb.fr sig, try logging into the account over there and customizing your sig. It should produce a png image link that we can use in this forum. I'm using one right now.

As far as WuProp, you'll notice that they log each app separately. So for example, primegrid has data for each of the sub-projects. Although some sub-projects may have low hours recorded, others have a great many.

Also, Sir Landroid, WuProp only began this new badge system recently. So it has only logged hours on WUs done since the badge system has started. And that only on systems where a WuProp WU had been running. I'm finding that I am going back to projects I left dormant just to get my hours.

BTW - I'm closing in on my 3rd star! #ni-1

They must have changed it since I made mine, it used to be

Now the site gives me

Thanks
