If all goes well, in 48 hours the U.S. contingent of Knights will have a President that won't be a global embarassment and will work, I believe, to make us citizens of the world again. On behalf of a lot of us, thanx for putting up with Bush's shit for too long now. We're working on it.

...and to my fellow Knight, the poet who posted "The Night Before...", the biggest socialists in my lifetime were Nixon, Reagan and W. Why is it "socialism" when someone tries to cut the average person a break and not socialism when we bail out Wall Street for 850 billion dollars or give corporations no-bid contracts as a license to steal?

Neither of our two major parties are anything and haven't been for a long time. They are red vs. blue. petty, conniving and dishonest. They are both so far on the bottom of the political spectrum that they are two sides of the same coin. No matter which of them comes out on top tomorrow, the rest of us all lose.

It appears we have a Democrat as a new knaggit. Don't believe everything you read Bruce. The all too liberal media (for years) has said nothing good about conservative people and nothing bad about liberal people.

Politicians are like diapers. They should be changed often and for the same reason.

Welcome Professor Bruce! Or, in my usual style Sir Professor Bruce!! It it OK if we just call you Bruce instead of Bru... ooo oh wait, you are already called that ... can we call you Sheila instead? Very Happy

ni! i!u
----------------------------------------------------------

"The Night Before..." as well as "Dear Fellow Business Owners" are political posts making the rounds of all the conservative sites and anywhere else. I made some effort to track down the original, but apparently these folks aren't big on attribution. I strongly suspect there is a group of people actively trying to spread these things around as a weird sort of campaign effort. More evidence of conservative frustration.

This hasn't been such a great campaign for the conservatives, and I've read that this may be part of the larger political cycles turning back to the liberal side (pay attention to what Matt Moon writes - not the gnashing of teeth in the comments).

I am sorely tempted to rant about the Republican party letting down their side of the two-party system. They (the party) ought to be doing better, but have let themselves get bogged down with issues that ought not to be political, and have lost sight of what used to be conservative principles.

But what do I know - I just repeat what the squirrels tell me. Wink

As compared to what non-wierd campaign effort of the last 20 years?

I believe BOTH parties have gotten away from their core principals & are now controlled by a few power hungry people. The ones trying to make a difference are pushed to the side (mainly because they aren't/won't/don't kiss the asses of those few in control).

The Democrats are hanging on to the memory of JFK. They despretly want Camelot to return. They claim that Clinton was the second coming of JFK, not so. He was someone that got elected and got lucky with the financial markets being real good at the time. Carter was a nice guy, but overmatched as President. He was too much of a Pacifist, other countries saw this and took advantage. Hopefully he will be better remembered for his work with Habitat for Humanity - that is the big public accomplishment in his life and it is an extremely good one.

The Republicans want Regan back. I can't blame them. He helped restore some pride in the country after the previous 20 years. But some things went his way too. The Soviet Union couldn't afford to keep up in the arms race (ironic - Socialism failed because they didn't have the capital). Regan looks like a hero. Bush Senior was good too. He had the brains, the international experience and it worked for him. Unfortunately, one line cost him a second term. "Read my lips". That cost him. Nixon was a very smart man, not too ethical. Ford had no chance. He was stained by Nixon. He did the right thing by pardoning Nixon so the country could move foward and avoid years of problems and distractions, in the end, that cost Ford (see Monica Lewinsky as to how a country can get distracted).

I just hope/pray that the best person gets elected today. The one that can help fix the problems. There is no immediate fix. It will take years. Neither side is completely right or wrong. They both have decent ideas. the best route is down the middle somewhere. Unfortunately neither party seems willing to work with the other.

Anyone remember when the Republicans used to be the party of fiscal responsibility? Now they spend as much as they accuse the Democrats of spending, and run up the deficit instead of paying as we go (Reagan started that). "Read my lips ..." did hurt Bush (the Elder), but that sound bite wouldn't have stuck except for the runaway spending and it's effects on the economy, which left Bush with no real choice but to raise taxes. Bush (the Younger) did essentially the same things (for aurguably different reasons), and this policy has come back to bite them twice now. The Democrats (Clinton) took over the responsible position for themselves, as even "Tax and Spend" is more responsible than "Don't Tax and Spend Anyway".
As an aside - Freakonomics has some interesting graphical comparisons of McCain and Obama tax plans.

In addition to his Habitat for Humanity work, Carter has been really outstanding in the role of Elder Statesman through The Carter Center and other activities. I rather agree with Sir Mohrorless about Carter, "nice" isn't really a quality that makes a good president.
I would suggest, without knowing quite how to say it, that we ought to consider just what sort of nastiness makes a good leader, and be willing to tolerate it in our political candidates.

The Republicans were certainly distracted, but everyone else got over it. I consider myself somewhere between Liberal/Moderate, and even I think Clinton deserved at least censure. The Republicans tried to make it into something bigger than it was, but ended up doing nothing. This was (IMLO) nothing short of incompetence.

I'm with you there, and I'm glad we can have a nice discussion about it too. Perhaps cooperation starts at the bottom and trickles up?

Loose women lying about in ponds and distributing swords is no basis for a system of government!!!

What Clinton did with Lewinsky was between himself, her and the wife. It's the purjury about the whole thing that he gat away with that annoys me. You or I would have done time for it, yet the Democrats think it was acceptable and the Republicans think he should have been stoned (err, umm, maybe he was) correction, hung....(oh dear, I really don't want to know if he was/is hung), let's just say burned at the stake. Yes that's what the Republicans (most of them) wanted.

I tend to run in the Conservative mode. I think I am careful and cautious. When the safety of the country is at stake, run a deficit for a little while, raise taxes to pay for the war that is about to happen to re-secure the country (it worked just fine uring WWII). Then return to normal.

Don't kid yourselves. The Democrats aren't the masters of frugality. They just spent it differently.

Fellow Prisoners:

Like Chris Matthews, I have a tingling feeling in my leg, but, alas, it may have only fallen asleep. To respond to the responses, the Knights don't have a new member that is Democrat - I voted Green (in a Red state), with ample apologies to Red Green.

Secondly, I am pleased to be part of this online community dedicated to the Pythons and wish to remind you that there is really no telling what an agnostic can do if he really doesn't know whether he believes in anything or not.

Crack the tubes - and vote Very Silly Party.

I did read the link, did you? With the exception of the 2004 election, this has held true and it held true again last night.

Lets run them down:
1936: Dems were in control, Redskins won, Dems won (1-0)
1940: Dems were in control, Redskins won, Dems won (2-0)
1944: Dems were in control, Redskins won, Dems won (3-0)
1948: Dems were in control, Redskins won, Dems won (4-0)
1952: Dems were in control, Redskins lost, Dems lost (5-0)
1956: Reps were in control, Redskins won, Reps won (6-0)
1960: Reps were in control, Redskins lost, Reps lost (7-0)
1964: Dems were in control, Redskins won, Dems won (8-0)
1968: Dems were in control, Redskins lost, Dems lost (9-0)
1972: Reps were in control, Redskins won, Reps won (10-0)
1976: Reps were in control, Redskins lost, Reps lost (11-0)
1980: Dems were in control, Redskins lost, Dems lost (12-0)
1984: Reps were in control, Redskins won, Reps won (13-0)
1988: Reps were in control, Redskins won, Reps won (14-0)
1992: Reps were in control, Redskins lost, Reps lost (15-0)
1996: Dems were in control, Redskins won, Dems won (16-0)
2000: Dems were in control, Redskins lost, Dems lost (17-0)
2004: Reps were in control, Redskins lost, Reps win (17-1)
2008: Reps were in control, Redskins lost, Reps lost (18-1)

With an 18-1 record, ill side with them! If 18-1 "holds no water", what does?

Not for at least another four years, and even then, you'd just be looking at the aftermath of the disaster.

Sport, films, documentaries, comedy are the only things I turn it on for and I'm very selective about those.
I have averaged about 2 hours of tv per week for more than a year now.
Try it, it's easy.
Just don't turn it on.
