Does anyone know how I could run SETI@home on pocket pc. It just sits in it's cradle most of the time being completely useless. I thought this would be a way for it to earn it's keep. Specs:
toshiba e750
Intel PXA255 400mhz
62MB system RAM
32MB System ROM
32MB Flash ROm
Pocket PC 2003
Has Internet Access via wireless broadband router
I have spent a couple hours searching and have found nothing useful at all.
Any Suggestions?
Thanx |

Question is why would you want to..
Its only 400mhz at best your looking at perfomance of a 300mhrz machine. the actual output of that machine would be soo small it would not really be worth using. Take a month or two to do 1 seti unit. _________________ Smoke-em if you got-em I do.. |

Thanx for the advice. As to why, I was looking for something for it to do besides being a very expensive place to keep my contacts and my shopping list. |

I have the same Pocket PC. The only good use I ever found for it was as a GPS receiver in my car. It's very good at that. _________________ I am Sî aliigi min en lacerto, a proud member of the Migratory Coconuts.

That's what I use my old company issue palm pilot for and it still sucks. |

Well a "real" 300 MHz machine could pump one out every 2 days or so. But the pocket PCs are built around the ARM processor which has no floating point unit. This pretty much eliminates it as a possibility for running seti since the FPU would have to be emulated, resulting in a HUGE performance hit. So all in all... yes, Cohiba is probably right. One work unit per month maybe. Plus the processor does not run at 400 MHz very much of the time. Only when you need it. Otherwise it throttles down to conserve batteries and reduce heat. With it running full speed all the time it would probably overheat something. |
