Very interesting thread. I've really enjoyed reading the different opinions.
Adding my 2 cents worth - I'm not particularly religious (submarine Catholic - surfaces in an emergency ) so I personally found it amusing and not offensive at all.
The thing that really amuses me is how the bible is interpreted so selectively by the reader, and why some some of the teachings should be taken seriously while others can be excused or disregarded. I think a lot of it is to do with a person's own cultural background and belief system. I also feel that the bible has been subjected to so many different interpretations that I often wonder how different to the original/s they are. For example, if you get 10 different people from 10 different cultural backgrounds to translate the same text into a common language, how many different versions would you have?
Quote: | Despite most religions claiming peaceful roots and tenets, they are the cause of a large amount of warfare, the RC church is responsible for most of the poverty in the third world with it blanket ban on family planning, thus forcing most women into almost constant pregnancy and childbirth.
Although I am willing to concede that “Jesus” et al. Did exist, they where just normal people who tried to say “ Hey wouldn’t it be better if we were all nice to each other” The Bible a book of folk memories (Noah’s flood=end of the last ice age) and sage advice (don’t eat pork in a hot climate with out refrigeration).
You don’t need a God to live a good life.

Totally agree with you, Sir Cracked of the Mind.
Who's to say that in 1 000 years 'The Lord of the Rings' won't be the new 'bible' and interpreted as being the history of the world? Just kidding...but it could happen. _________________ My brain hurts.

I apologise if I've offended anyone. I certainly don't expect other people to agree with my opinion, I was just adding it to the mix.

Too late, jbyram2! I read your response late last night ( Aussie time ) and set off in search of my biggest slapping fish to respond to your truncheon. Unfortunately my fish was having his scales cleaned ( or so he says ) and did not return in time for the slapping. *sigh* _________________ My brain hurts.
