Increase the amount of foreplay. It may lead to Boinc'ing... _________________ I am Sî aliigi min en lacerto, a proud member of the Migratory Coconuts.

I am doing a bit of foreplay with CPDN but it takes about a month for it to complete one WU.

Yeah, I'm finding that out. Downloaded my first work unit and it looks like it will take 600 hours / 24 = 25 days! What's going on, am I calculating the weather pattern over the vast territory surrounding the twin peaks of Mt. Kilamonjaro???

It seems to take about a month to complete a WU.

|

I just found out about the technique of showing project graphics by right clicking on the project under the work tab, then clicking on "Show Graphics". In this project, this shows a globe that is color coded by temperature. If you click the letters T, P, R, S, or U on the keyboard, you can also look at precipitation, pressure, clouds, etc. It also shows the date that you are calculating - for example, I am currently modelling data for March 30, 1823. Pretty snappy!
But as we've said before, MAN these are some HUGE shrubs! I've crunched 150 hours on this one and completed only 27%! This is with a 2.6 Ghz celery, neither beast nor slouch? I think a completed shrub covers about 30 years of global climate data! |

I started CPDN in beta test. In the email they sent out inviting me to join the beta, they explicitly told me it would take a month on a 2.6 GHz CPU. Did they take this out of the email now? They really should warn people so someone doesn't start it up on some PII 350 and crunch for 3 years |

Close, your working out the weather patterns for upto 300 years (100 in past, 100 present and 100 future). This isn't exactly correct, more info on the site, but if you want to read it like this, it makes sense. _________________ Smiley |

These guys can't predict tomorrows weather for chrissakes, and I'm supposed to believe them what is was like 150 years ago !
I find that my level of flatulence is the best predictor . If the barometric pressure goes down, my flatulence goes up and it's gonna rain soon. The opposite produces nice dry, sunny days .
Whoa Nelly.......my chairs on fire ............ looks like rains coming .

Set the "Do work while user is active?" to yes on your account - general preferences page. That should help you out. _________________ When in doubt, kick it until it works. |

Check your email, I just received a strange one from ClimatePredition. There is a problem with a small number of work units and they're sending this email only to folks they think might have these units. Looks like a pain, but I'd sure hate to crunch 600 hours then not be able to return the results!
Quote: | Hello,
Forgive the email, but we have discovered that a batch
of workunits sent
out at the start of the CPDN/BOINC launch has an error
in their configuration
that would prevent a file getting uploaded at the end
of a run. If your machine(s)
listed below is still running the listed result,
please do the following
to correct this problem.
1) stop the BOINC client on the machine
2) copy "client_state.xml" file in the BOINC directory
to "client_state.bak",
just to have a backup in case the editing in 3)
goes wrong
3) open the "client_state.xml" file in the BOINC
directory in the text editor of your choice
4) search for "_1.zip" in this file
5) two lines down from this you should see a line
starting with "<max_nbytes>"
6) change the value after "<max_nbytes>" from 1 to 5
(so it will be 5000000)
7) Important: do not edit any lines that are between
(or just after)
a line beginning with "<signed_xml>"
Repeat if you have other results affected on this
machine from the list
below, bearing in mind you should not change a
"<max_nbytes>" line that is
located between lined with "<signed_xml>" and
"</signed_xml>" tags
There is also an online reference on the User
Discussion page at:
http://www.climateprediction.net/board/viewtopic.php?p=20943#20943
We do apologize for the trouble. It is not a
"critical error" that would
prevent your run from completing, so if you have any
apprehension about
editing this file, that is OK (it's just that the
*_1.zip file will not be
sent, but other files will be).
This only effects a small number of workunits that
were sent out around the
time of the CPDN/BOINC launch on 26 August '04, and
the machines and result
names are located below.
Sincerely,
Carl Christensen
Chief Software Architect
