|
|
Our CPU PotM for December is a new one - Universe @ Home. This project addresses three areas: Ultraluminous X-ray Sources (ULX), Gravitational Waves, and Supernovae Ia.
Quote: | New ULX application
Last week we prepared the ULX application which is closely related to the previous (now obsolete) X-ray application. It is investigating the possibility of connecting the Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULX) with X-ray binaries (XRB). We want to make a comprehensive study far wider than the one from the test project which was published in September.
ULXs are one of the greatest conundrums currently investigated in astronomy and every month new observations are coming up. Our code is the best to deal with the problem of their nature from the theoretical side. ULXs are very rare systems. In our simulations only 1 XRB per 100 have a very short phase of such a high emission and only in some particular models.

I was able to dump the project then re-boot the computer and re-attach.
The open WU's that had been causing the problem were finally marked as abandoned, which allowed me to get more work.
Also - Nice to know others are seeing the same anomalies etc.
...WHEW! *(thought I had finally flipped off the deep end)
It was/is a Server and/or WU issue but causes problems only with windoz tasks.
Apparently related somehow to return xml being truncated.
I guess nobody has yet told U@H about the KWSN PotM curse. _________________

All systems GO. WU/Server issues solved.
If you're having problems getting files you may have to:
-Detach U@H from BOINC Mgr. after double checking Project preferences
-Close BOINC
-reboot computer (Windoz only)
-Open BOINC Mgr. and suspend any other projects running CPU WU's
-Re-attach U@H
*this clears out any stuck slots and deletes truncated xml return files from U@H
*if still no WU then check Project Prefs. again and update BOINC Mgr.
(lets keep this KWSN PotM curse thing our little secret) |

Yeah so I just built a brand new computer this weekend and figured... what the shrubbery. Why not throw some real work at it while I'm not making use of it for some games. Looks like it is doing pretty well. I'ts an i7 6700k. Also tossed gpugrid on the geforce 970 for giggles.
Turns out, I still remember how to apply thermal paste to a CPU even though I haven't built a system since 2011!
On the other hand, Windows 10 might take some getting used to... |

For Knights interested in more than points and badges here's one of the projects we're shrubbing. The other sub-project is described in the OP.
Quote: | New BHspin application
As you might have noticed we added a new application recently. It is devoted to investigate the spin evolution of black holes.
When a black hole accretes matter, at the same time it accretes the angular momentum, which results in faster spinning. In this model we examine the influence of this process. What makes it particularly interesting is the fact the the LIGO observatory of gravitational waves started to operate recently. Therefore, in the near future, our theoretical predictions will be checked against observation.

Seems that U@H has issues again. lots of people can't get new work, myself included. Switching CPU to WCG for the rest of the year. _________________

Same props here - tried disconnecting from project but that didn't help. The PotM curse has struck again!
update - just tried again and it worked! crunchin' _________________ a monster can be excused for his behaviour . . . The problem is not how a monster could do it, but how a human being did it.
