thanks to fellow kniggit Blurf for posting over on SETI about the ending of funding for BOINC -
BOINC's funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation has ended - see forum thread at

Isn't it funny how those who used to cry the loudest about "it's for the science" are the first to walk away when the money disappears... _________________

So I read through the posts on the seti forum and from what i read it doesn't mean that all boinc projects will close. Boinc still works and will continue to work as it does now and projects can still use it. It does however mean that any future updates/bug fixes will have to be done by members of the community instead of the guys who were getting paid to code it. _________________

I'm aware volunteers can manage complex software such as the Linux kernel and the myriad distributions, but they also have significant input from corporations such as Oracle. Also Linux started that way - with Boinc, volunteers have to dive in after 15 years of development. I have a sick feeling Boinc software will deteriorate from neglect and this will be and end of an era unless IBM/WCG or folks like that replace this void.
Please help - I need soothing...
