|
|
After a close vote, Simap is our Project of the Month for December 2014. Simap became a sentimental favorite since it is ending at the end of this year, our final sendoff for some very interesting research.
Quote: | SIMAP is a database of protein similarities and protein domains. It contains about all currently published protein sequences and is continuously updated. ... SIMAP is to our knowledge the only project that combines comprehensive coverage with respect to all known proteins and incremental update capabilities.
Because of the huge amount of known protein sequences in public databases it became clear that most of them will not be experimentally characterized in the near future. Nevertheless, proteins that have evolved from a common ancestor often share same functions (so-called orthologs). So it is possible to infer the function of a non-characterized protein from an ortholog with known function.

Simap has been known to issue large numbers of WUs at the beginning of the month, but have them all enshrubulated by mid-month. In the event that happens again, our back up project will be the 2nd place project known as The CERN Triple, which may be renamed after Sir Ivanst, the loonie who thunked it up.
The Sir Ivanst/CERN Triple consists of three projects related to the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. To participate, shrub any one or all three in any combination.

Atlas@Home
Virtual LHC@Home/Formerly Test4Theory
The last two require Oracle VirtualBox to run. However that is basically transparent: install VM software, then attach to the project, no additional settings required. |

Uh-ohhhh!
About 25 Knights shrubbed Simap in the past week including 110K points yesterday. If the WUs hold up, that's double production.
Milestones:
DoW 4,000,000
Plomos 8,000
williamd007 3,000 |

Think I saw about 50K WUs yesterday. Do they issue only 24 hours worth at a time? Seems like they are flowing, but may need a 2 day cache to stay ahead if it? KWSN daily production has been over 100K the last two days, double the rate at beginning of the month.
Only 3 1/2 weeks of shrubbing left until Simap closes forever... _________________

Simap is officially dead. Early this month they marked themselves expecting to be out of work on the 15th. I think that got sped up. Finish what you have and start decimating another project! _________________ Some days are worse than others. |

On the 18th PrimeGrid has their Solstice challenge. PPS Sieve, so even your GPU can have fun. Since SIMAP is all but done, let's rock this challenge and get high marks.
Just an idea. Do what you will.
Reminder, PrimeGrid does not allow you to stock up work before a challenge. Work issued after start time and returned before end time are the only ones counted. _________________ Watch the movie about me The 4-1-4s: The Original Teenage Hackers (It is only about 12 minutes long.)

Don't forget the official back up project: The CERN Triple. See 2nd post in this thread, worth some experimentation... _________________
