I have always preferred to use Global preferences. I am finding it harder and harder to live just under 4 different preferences.

I now have the need to make adjustments more than 4 different ways. Problem is if I start doing local preferences I will not easily remember to adjust when moving to different projects. With global I can set and go.

Argh, why does this have to get tougher as I get older, memory not being as sharp as it once was (too much up there and more goes up there every day making more and more crowded, so harder to pull up less trivial information).

I know there probably are not as many of you that need this diversity, but if you do, what is your method of keeping track of things? I want to make my machines as efficient as possible, but at the moment I am limited.

Guess no one has the diversity in machines as I do. I took one machine (the one I use most) and made it the local preference machine.

Once I update the Core2Quad to a newer box, I will again be able to move back to the 4 Global preference system, but right now I have 5 different settings needed to make things work as efficiently as possible.

Just to break it down.
2 machines have I7 & NVidia, using 4 cores (50%) and GPU
1 machine has I7 & ATI, using 4 cores (50%) and GPU
1 machine is Core2Quad, using 4 cores (100%), no GPU
1 machine is personal, using 3 cores (37.5%), old NVidia unused
1 machine is Tablet, using 3 cores (75%)

I have tried my machines with HT off, and on at 50%. They run best with on and 50% by a large margin. My personal box always has other background processes and running it at 3 cores is best because of the contention for memory. The tablet is also most efficient at 3 cores.

The C2Q will be updated to an I7 with NVidia probably over the summer, then will match with the first 2 machines on the list.

I could also split the two I7 with NVidia because one is a slower unit and isn't able to compute the larger projects that the other one does, so I could use 6 different preferences, easily. Alas I manage those two with Global preference carefully.

I refuse to use a BOINC Manager (like BAM) because some projects are not well integrated and I've seen several horror stories and all the CPID splits because of it. Not for me.

I found that to be true on the last PG challenge, but are you saying this is true in general, even for WCG and so on?

The "locked down" motherboards I have (big brand built machines), do some funny stuff with their BIOS. Running what they mark as "HT OFF" seems to actually be running half cores with HT on. I get the same speed running 4 units in this mode as I would when running 8 with HT on. I have tested on many projects and all acted the same. I have never run WCG.

I used to build my own machines and would not have this issue, but as I got older, the components smaller and more delicate, I had started causing more issues than I wanted to handle, so I went prebuilt. I get the machines I do because of experience in long run life and not many major issues.

I just stumble about. If I get all my shrubbers on the PoTM sometime during that month I'm happy, more or less. They all need a good cleaning, overhaul, and replacement of several components; fans, filters, GPU's. Getting lazy. Embarassed
