We currently have 4 votes each for SkyNet/POGS and SAT. The latter has never been PotM.

SAT@home is a research project that uses Internet-connected computers to solve hard and practically important problems (discrete functions inversion problems, discrete optimization, bioinformatics, etc) that can be effectively reduced to Boolean satisfiability problem. At the moment we are searching for triple of mutually orthogonal Latin squares of order 10.

The data processed through theSkyNet SourceFinder is both real radio astronomy data from the Parkes radio telescope in New South Wales, simulated data of a quality expected from the Australian SKA Pathfinder in coming years. Both data sets are being used to test and optimise a source finding algorithm that automates the process of discovering sources of cosmic radio waves, predominantly galaxies, within large datasets, cutting the processing needed on real data by up to 90%.

The BOINC aspect of theSkyNet mostly processes images of galaxies taken by the Pan-STARRS1 telescope in Hawaii as part of the Pan-STARRS Optical Galaxy Survey (POGS). Hence the name ‘theSkyNet POGS’. Galaxy data from other sources is also processed with theSkyNet POGS, namely data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, WISE and Galax.
