I am very relieved about that. It was becoming very tedious with people always claiming to be winning etc., etc.
Once you close a thread in this forum, is that the end of it? ... or does it continue in some sort of ridiculous stage production, like say, SPAMALOT ?
Is there a way to do a silly walk around it? ... or is it just a stupid Dead Parrot?
Is there a way to calculate the end of such things? .... or must one first find the continent of the species origin?

At noon recess on Friday, November 22 1963, 50 years ago today, a very weird rumor started circulating around the playground at the Jackson Elementary School. Some of the teachers were crying. Us kids were totally confused and baffled. Later there was an visit from the Principal to each class and then each teacher made an announcement to the class... Someone had shot the President. Could it be true? How is it possible that the President has been shot? We were all still talking about him at school and at home from his recent visit to us. This just couldn't be true !!!
Jackson, Wyoming in 1963 barely had a population of 1,800 in the town and perhaps only 3,500 in the entire county. We were pretty isolated most of the year, (9 months of winter). We did have a rather robust summer industry of tourism when Yellowstone Park was open, being at the southern gateway. Between our town and Yellowstone, John D. Rockefeller had purchased huge tracts of land which he donated to the US government to create Teton National Park in exchange for a "ranch" in Phelps Canyon and the concessions for the entire park. They, (Rockefellers') built Jackson Lake Lodge to collect some of the "concession bucks" when a dam was built on the Snake river.
In late September 1963 JFK made a quick tour of the Western States making 3 stops in Wyoming; at the state capitol in Cheyenne first, then to Laramie at UofW for a speech, and then, after flying up to Montana, an overnight stay at Jackson Lake Lodge just 25 miles north of Jackson. Kennedy’s visit was the first to Jackson by a sitting president since Chester A. Arthur in the 1880s and only the third to Wyoming since Teddy Roosevelt's 1903 tour of the Yellowstone area. This was a HUGE thing to the locals (100+ mile radius). My mother pulled me out of school, Sept. 25th to see him land at the airport (12 miles north of town) to get into his helicopter to go to the Lodge. There was a huge crowd there, but since my family were local politicians, and I was dressed in my Cub Scout uniform, I was chosen to stand next to the fence when he landed. JFK broke from the Secret Service and the official greeters there and went directly to the crowd to shake hands. A friend of mine, Teresa, had been given a JFK pin by one of the President's entourage and I got to see him up close. Being a whinny 8 year old (almost nine), I complained bitterly to my mother that he had not shaken my hand and Teresa had got a pin... so she promised to take me with her to a separate "meet & greet" she was supposed to attend the next day at Jackson Lake Lodge.
.......................................................................
*** At Jackson Lake Lodge on September 26th, 1963, The Jackson Guide, a local newspaper, caught me looking directly at the photographer just after JFK shook my hand. JFK is standing center, just to the right of Mt. Moran, and directly behind me, talking to a little blond girl. I am the smiling boy looking at the camera with my hair combed "like the President". My mother is sitting down looking at me and wearing her best plaid jacket.***
........................................................................
As you can imagine, today being November 22nd, 2013, brings back a lot of memories. I think about that same Friday on the playground and how confused we were that all of our teachers were so upset that they were crying, yet they would not tell us why. Yes, we had reason to be as devastated in Jackson, Wyoming as anybody in the US. He was "our President" too.
I win. |
