I'm going out on a limb to say such a blasphemous thing, but...
was just thinkin' .... perhaps there is something wrong with those WU's ??
I think I got lucky with the 4 I tried. One erred out and 3 finished in 40-80 hours.
I wasn't even shrubbing them when the .exe files corrupted.
You fine Knights are more than patient... or ??? #ni-1

AVG reported the two QMC.exe were corrupt and removed them. I was crunching Seti at the time and had not been shrubbing the QMC for a whole day. When it happened I also deleted all the associated files in the Widoz Program Data folder, just to clean it all up. I may try again in a few months if I see others reporting improvements. Right now, I'm not willing to take the time or the risk.

I haven't used norton or mcaffee in years so I don't know where there at. I have used AVG in the past and was disappointed with it. Every computer that has been brought in to me this year for virus-removal was using AVG. If it's currently better than the other two that says a lot, though Norton is listed as up there after checking reviews. I currently use Kaspersky. I get the occasional hiccup with it (nothing to do with viruses) but other than that it works well. Access control is great. F-secure and Bitdefender are supposed to work really well also. I would suggest getting a non-free version if that's what it takes to get access control as well. Lets you know if something acts improperly.

Better than anti-virus protection, make sure you have a good hardware firewall. Most cable/dsl modems have them these days, just make sure you change the default passwords at a minimum. Sadly, this is something simple that most people don't do.

I haven't used Norton since 2002 and haven't used Macaffee this century.
They both let me down way back when.
You are right, it is probably high time that I pay for a decent virus program.
That is the third recommendation I've gotten for Kasperskey, so maybe I'll look into it. I, of coarse, had changed the default pswd on the wi-fi. . . also . . . I use PeerBlock and a VPN because I run a P2P.
Problem with changing a virus prog is you can never quite get rid of all the odd bits it leaves. Whenever I have switched in the past, I gave up and reformatted the drive and re-installed Windoz. (maybe Windoz is the culprit there)

I'll also have a re-look at the cable modem. It was new a few months ago.

The icing on the cake was when Commie Grid gave
me a Clean Energy thingie and I was spending a lotta
time there too!

Well QMC completely sucks at this point, let's see how it looks after the official release next month. I got 1200 hours QMC shrubbing time in WUProp, so that's one good thing, but only 1K points for all that effort cuz most WU's passed the deadline... Laughing

Your modem should have it's own IP address and login. They should have given you documentation for the default login when you got it and if nothing else you should change the password on it.

As for the IP, it depends on your setup. It might be on a sticker on the bottom/back of the modem. If not, check the ip of your computer. If it's something like 192.169.1.20 then your modem should be 192.168.1.1 or .1.0. varies by manufacturer. '

It's also possible with cable that the modem they gave you is dumb and has no firewall/router functions, which makes it more important to have something of your own that does. Like an access point with a firewall between you and the modem.

If your modem is dumb and you have nothing else but you have an old low power PC laying around you could check out smoothwall or something similar. Just don't rely on your ISP to keep you safe and my personal opinion is your software firewall should only be backup protection. But I am a security nut.
