Let's have some Input from all of us Looneys about improving our Fortress here!
Nothing specific is yet worked out, but at least some are seeing what MAY be possible
As I see things, we have:
1 - The Orbiting Fortress
2 - The Outhouse, err, Outpost (out there... Somewhere)
3 - The KWSN Stats Page
4 - The kNI!ggtly Photos Page (Same Host as I recall)
5 - The Enhanced Apps Page
I think one primary problem is the ongoing expenses, borne for the most part by some sole kNI!ggt
We need to support ourselves, and ALL of us do what we can to help!
We should not become an unbearable burden on a Fellow kNI!ggt!
I think we need to consider Donations, and I will if/when we implement something
Please see what YOU can do, if you can. Or share a constructive thought or twenty!
There are a few ways we could do the Donation thing, but we'll work that out later...
Right now, I'd like to know if this is what YOU all want! :ni-3: _________________

In addition to making a Monthly Donation, I can make a one-time Donation and may even be able to help with some Hardware, like a Dell Xeon Dual Core Rack Server! (Might hafta arrange a few things here)
NI! for one and all for NI! _________________

Hate to see that stats page disappear when so many projects and other references have links to it. I am new here to this team and new to shrubbery cultivation, but would be willing to cough up a buck or two every now and then to keep a server running or for site hosting. You have a good team here with a great history and the coolest name. All the herring are ready for the chopping... lets do this thing. _________________

I would be willing to Donate irregularly for our ongoing expenses
Do we have at least some rough estimation of our monthly expenses?

I hope all of us could eke out some Fundage, even a bit, to help keep us up and running, even if Donations are
infrequent and as-available. I am able to budget in some every Month, to support ALL our Sites!
If everybody could Donate even five dollars a Month, and if we got fifty Donations, that's $250 a Month!
Of course, some may be able to do more, some may have other more pressing things that Month and cannot hLep.
It is possible we could be 'sort of' a Non-Profit Organization, but not REALLY one. Just use these PayPal Rules:
Quote: | PayPal has been very helpful in explaining how this works.
We can operate as an 'organization' without having to officially file for tax-exempt status as a
non-profit organization, as long as we abide by some simple rules:
1) We cannot claim to be a "non-profit organization" - it implies that donations to us are tax-deductible (they are not).
2) We cannot use collected funds to financially compensate any individuals associated with our group.
3) We cannot receive more than $10,000 per year in total donations.
4) We cannot receive more than 200 donations per month (regardless of amounts). |
I don't have any actual numbers, but let's use these for some sort of comparison:
I have paraphrased some great input from Sir Putting Things On Top:
If we have a 'Rainy Day' Account of maybe $1,000 for any emergency we may have, more than
enough to cover about 2-3 years of continuity-plan expenses (multi-year service contracts, etc.)
And if we have an ongoing 'Monthly Expenses' Account of maybe $500, then we could receive
Donations from who is able to hLep out until we get near that 200 Donations in a single Month.
For example, if we have $820 in the 'Rainy Day' Account, our "Reserve Balance" Account,
we need to make it $1,000 again.
If our 'Monthly Expenses' Account, or "Operating Account", is $500, and we add new Donations/Commitments of
perhaps $245, we have $745. Now we pay our ongoing Monthly Fees
(For Rack Space Hosting, Server repairs, whatever), and if we still have over $500, we see if we need
to 'Top Off' our 'Rainy Day' Account.
We had $245 extra, so we put $180 into the Reserve Balance Account, back up to $1,000.
Now we have $565, so there is an excess of $65 still.
Anything left over is available for sharing. We could choose to support DC-Vault, or BOINC-Stats, or EOC-Stats,
or any reasonable DC-type charity (or combination) as recipients. No individual may receive these funds!
Sir PToT is trying to figure out how all this may be possible, maybe ToeBee will come join in the chat here...
This is all at a very early stage, until we have some sort of input from others if we're doing what
is best for the whole of KWSN, of course!

Thanks Phred.
I voted "I would be willing to Donate Monthly for our ongoing expenses", but I am staying with "I would be willing to Donate irregularly for our ongoing expenses".

The implementation of the Donations is not yet in place - I only tried it to see if it works and yes,
we could do both one-time Donations or ongoing Monthly Pledges - I do hope we get this in place!
