Just like to report the exsistance of a new desert completely devoid of life - namely the Docking@home messageboard.
There's more life on a frozen asteroid in orbit around Uranus. That would make it a moon and not an asteroid, but you get the picture ...
RIP Docking@home messageboard.
Funeral on Thursday 13.00 UTC - please send flowers etc to Docking@home via Boinc Berkeley CA. _________________ a monster can be excused for his behaviour . . . The problem is not how a monster could do it, but how a human being did it.

You mean a message board. Was about to say that deserts aren't devoid of life, and I don't just mean cactii...

http://www.biotecharticles.com/Applications-Article/Extremophilic-Microbes-Organisms-Living-in-Extreme-Conditions-585.html
Lets just say that the field of biology as I took it in high school in the late 80s/early 90s, and what was taught when I took it in college (late 90s to about 11 years ago) were 2 entirely different things. There wasn't even exactly the same number of kingdoms to classify things. And these extremophiles was a lot of the difference, as was how the liklihood for life to form in conditions previously thoguht impossible. Course it's this difference, combined with people finding extra-solar planets, which has people looking at the question of life beyond Earth very different today, then many looked at it 25-30 years ago even.... _________________

If I remember correctly, a desert is defined as an area with less then a certain amount of percipitation (it was a long time ago when I did Geography in school). Lifeless as you say is not included in the definition, but Docking@home's messageboard is reminiscent of a desert but without life at all.
Standard funereal garb on Thursday.

Yeah, it was lifeless, I was refering to. Their boards can be lifeless, deserts are not Life has evolved to servive in areas with very little precipitation, also existing at 140+ degree temperatures, heck thriving in it... Microbes can be very abundant
Course, after the shift in thinking (and they also found chemeo-synthetic organisms serviving down on the ocean floor round abouts the Mariana (sp?) trench, near deep sea lava vents, at a depth no sun light can reach. Instead of producing energy by photosynthesis, they use the heat and sulpher from the lava vents as an energy source and as a replacement to oxygen in their metabolic process, to sustain the food chain there, which is quite alien from the one in our own biosphere...
Actually it's discoveries like this, heck life has even evolved to being able to thrive in radiation rich environments like the inside of a nuclear reactor, which has them now considering the possibilities not only for micro-biotic life on Mars, but in the oceans they expect to be in the interior of Europa, and they're now questioning one of Saturn's moons as well (I/O, which has a methane rich atmosphere that seems to constantly replenish in spite of sun light destroying the methane over time)...
Yeah, deserts aren't necessarily defined as dead anymore, given well, more modern discoveries... Though the organisms that evolve to thrive there, are vastly different from the sorts we tend to encounter and see on a regular basis _________________

All this talk of microbes has probably got the OCD types rushing off to the bathroom ...
Yep, life is everywhere, but not on the Docking@home messageboard. Maybe we should try some Terraforming ... mmm ...

Docking message board is not the default communication means with the project owners.
DPC has held their yearly stampede on this project and had requested feedback one month in advance if the servers could handle the load, but no reaction at all. At the start of the stampede the wu server could not deliver the amount of requested work units and the stampede almost ground to a halt. _________________ SAVE THE WHALES. Collect the whole set.

I've a hunch that the work ran out long ago and we're all just crunchin' the same stuff over and over again.

Is "docking" a euphemism for ... you know, nude nudge wink wink, etc?

What? Candid Photography?

For allowing the stork to take up permanent residence in one's home, so it will have less traveling to do for all the frequent deliveries it will be making? _________________
