FreeHal has almost 10K WU's ready. See Euro-solicitation email I rec'd a few days ago below. This is a project looNIe enough for KWSN, helping German computer students after their servers were confiscated by the police!
Quote: | FreeHAL is financed by donations, but as opposed to most other BOINC projects, there is no big organization or sponsor behind FreeHAL.
Since April 2012 our regular servers are offline after the German police seized them because a hacker could have abused them for illegal purposes. They are currently analyzing them and because they are evidences, we don't expect to get them back for at least a few years.
Although some people (Elton Chung and Pierre Dennert) are hosting a boinc mirror for us, we still need 70 euros per month for our project servers. I'm a 2nd semester computer science student and it's really difficult for me because I can't afford this on my own. This is why I have to ask all of you for support. Here are some details about our current work:
- Freehal's codebase has been completely redesigned since the beginning of the year and we have migrated our repositories to Google Code. Freehal is being actively developed, as you can see at our repository commits: https://code.google.com/p/freehal/source/list
- Since June 2012 we provide an Android App for smartphones and tablets at Google Play. It supports voice recognition and speech synthesis. Currently it's only available in German, but support for English is planned in near future. It uses our servers for computing the answer, but we are also working an an ARM port for (rooted) Android devices currently to make it available for offline use. Please note that this App is a developer version and can be quite unstable, so don't give us a bad rating at Google Play if it crashes or doesn't work as expected. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.freehal.app
- After the servers have been taken offline for some weeks in April 2012, we migrated the BOINC application to the new code base. It works better and more stable than last year and a growing number of BOINC users is helping us to compute the semantic networks which contain Freehal's knowledge.
- You can also see a lot of information about how Freehal analyses sentences at our Grammar Demo: https://www.tobias-schulz.eu/demo-grammar
I hope this explains what we are doing and what our goals are If you would like to help us, you can donate something via Paypal or European/German Bank Transfer.

Thank you,

They're nice easy credits for credit ho's, given it's non-intensive on the CPUs (won't take a core). Can just run it along side other projects, and rack in the credits _________________

People always think I speak looniness when I am trying to speak English. So it would be nice tool for improving both

Well the best part with this project is you can set it to run non-CPU intensive WUs; so it's paying you credits, while using very little of a CPU core. It's sorta a set it an forget it, and just collect the credits. Technically it would take a few cyles from other tasks, but with the credit return it's barely noticeable, and as such BOINC doesn't have to schedule time for it to run... You just up the rack, and if the whole team ran it in the background our collective RAC would go up... _________________

Any idea what means this (found it in "Tasks" after I joined the project)?
Quote: | Warning: file(/var/www/projects/freehal_at_home/wu-logs/deleted.log): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/boincadm/www/default/projects/freehal_at_home/html/user/deleted-log.php on line 78 Warning: array_reverse() expects parameter 1 to be array, boolean given in /home/boincadm/www/default/projects/freehal_at_home/html/user/deleted-log.php on line 79 Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home/boincadm/www/default/projects/freehal_at_home/html/user/deleted-log.php on line 80 |
I am running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4.
Thanks in advance & _________________

On Windows, never ran into that, is that on your end, or theirs? You might want to ask in the project forums, or try resetting. But first, did it get work and is it crunching, or it wan't even begin?
OS-X is based on BSD, (under the Apple GUI), so it is a bit different then Windows. Not really more I can say from thousands of miles away (potentially)... Not an issue I had run into though (even many years ago when I had BOINC running on Linux)m so it's a new one for me... _________________

I checked FreeHal site after I connected it to Boinc manager on Mac OS and did not receive any WU, and found this info in "Tasks".
Probably does not work on Macs. I connected it on my second PC running under Win XP and it works fine.
Cheers and Ni! _________________

As a long-term Win user, I have to accustom myself that lot of things are not running on Macs

Technically, you could run it under a virtual machine, if you get software for that Only thing, running a VM would be far more resource intensive then a non-resource intensive project using minimal CPU time....
Actually considering that Mac OS-X is really free BSD under the hood, with the Mac GUI slapped on (OK, perhaps a little over-simplification, but if you get down to the level of the actual system as you'd see it from the command prompt, it's all BSD), and given that they have a Linux api, it'd probably be possible for someone to do a port if they chose. We're roughly talking 2 different flavors of UNIX here....
Few have done this sort of thing on science apps though, especially as they tend not to be open source (as BOINC itself is). The person who Einstein@home finally hiered to help with their app, after he made the opti-apps for their project being one noteable exception...
They're a private company though I'm gathering, so they might not respond in the same way a scientific dept at a major university had though. And yet, and with this said, when Raymond Tan created his Diablo trainer for Diablo way back in the day, Blizzard did end up hiering him Even still, reverse engineering something to port it is far less straight forward then a simple compilation, and Asmoff (think that was his name) did have to do a lot of testing to assure good results.... _________________

So, you say this would be the simpliest solution.

So...When are the reinvented Gestapo confiscating every other computer in Germany? By extension they all fall under the same banner. _________________

If it's anything like at Sandia here; you could begin by emailing pgp encrypted email to the top contributors there; then if the officials don't get the message there, sprinkle a lil pr0n into the pgp encrypted emails
I'm not sure how thorough they are on their crackdowns; but I used to have a few college professors who jointly worked at Sandia.... Having any encryption they didn't control was a big no, no; so sending an email encrypted with pretty good privacy was a big deal
Albeit that gives an idea. Perhaps one could skip the occassional pr0n in the pgp encrypted email, and send mostely gibberish which is then encrypted, except for a few words such as missle, rocket launcher, and uranium, or plutonium. They'd be pouring over those computers, for awhile _________________
