Einstein@Home GPU Application for ATI/AMD Graphics Cards

After more than a year of work by Oliver Bock, Bernd Machenschalk, Heinz-Bernd Eggenstein and other developers, we are pleased to announce the release of the first Einstein@Home application for ATI/AMD Graphics Cards.

This OpenCL application, which searches Arecibo data for new radio pulsars, is about a factor of ten faster than the same search running on a typical CPU. The application is currently available for Windows and Linux computers with Radeon HD 5000 or better graphics cards. We hope to have a version for Macintosh (Apple OS X 10.8, Mountain Lion) sometime this summer, but there are still some problems that need to be fixed or worked around.

Volunteers who wish to run this application will need to install version 7.0.27 or later of the BOINC client. Please see this thread for more information, or if you want to ask questions.

Many thanks to the AMD/ATI team for their support in the OpenCL software development effort.

Bruce Allen
Director, Einstein@Home

Put my slow card on it to test. So far looks promising. We'll see how she goes.

Yeah I saw that and looked for the 7.0.27 BONIC client they said about in the BOINC message. Couldn't find it in amongst the versions on the download page they directed you to.

Suddenly realised that I don't need it because this card is CUDA and not ATI/AMD Lol and I have the latest version anyway which is 7.0.25.

So what is the difference between the two versions of BONIC?

Download of 7.0.27 or newer versions
It's just a listing and you need to find your version.
It acts the same as 7.0.25 except it seems to see OpenCL better.

Berkley BOINC/SETI webservers seem to be down. Since these are hosted at the same site I suspect they are doing some work there today.

I have 2 ATI cards running here are results:
HD5600 series does the units in approximately 3 hours.
Example WU
HD5700 series does the units in a bit over 2 hours.
Example WU

Granted credit shows as 500.00. Not the best paying for the time (Moo! still beats it), but somewhat respectable for what I see others pay. It seems to be using between 15% and 25% of a processor.

Thanks Pooh Bear as I am using the 7.0.25 version I don't know if I can go to that project.

For me, at this moment, the best paying project is Poem, with 3 tasks at the same time for one GPU and two cores. But gives almost the same as Moo with another CPU good paying project.

I am going to wait till I can download the 7.0.27 version of Boinc.

Berkley will probably be up by the time you see this, but I uploaded my copy of 7.0.27 Windows 64 bit if anybody wants to grab it.

Read over on Einstein that the science lab that holds BOINC/SETI has a major power outage and it may be days. Einstein has put up Windows 7.0.28 on their server. Read this message for the links.

Berkley is back online, so if you want to get those downloads, go here and get them. I am using 7.0.27 but 7.0.28 is already online.

I looked at a few WUs other people completed, 1.5-2hrs. GPU time plus having to reserve a CPU core for 500pts.? Plus BOINC 7.0.27 plus picky drivers?

No thanks. Rolling Eyes
