Have you tried snoozing BOINC and playing (snooze only lasts an hour or until you remove the snooze)? Does the game play OK then? If so, then suspend the work while playing then resume when done playing. |

That's what I've always done when playing 'big' games. I suspend boinc whenever I'm playing. 'Little' games I just play, stuff like freebie online flash games and the like.
On a different note, I'll be keeping at least something going on dDM after the PotM is over, hopefully the interest by other teams stays low and we can keep our buffer for a long time. _________________

Must admit I had not thought of that one. However, until about 2-3 months ago this has not been a problem. Now its happening with all games I play and some applications I use. Not good. Bad JAVA.
It all started after the V.6.1.3 Java which was issued around September this year and not getting the normal update prompt. Used to get the update prompt regularly which suddenly stopped. Since then I have found 2 JAVA compromises on my machine. Just wondering if this is related?
Previously I could play games and BOINC would continue in the background with only a small drop in production.
After the issues started with JAVA I uninstalled it and there were no issues. Reinstalled it and the issues started up again. So I really need to get to the bottom of what is causing the conflict so I can either build a work around or find another way of enabling the programs which are affected.
I will try the Snooze option and give feedback. _________________ What is that in the Shrubbery?

What about a complete format and reinstall of the whole system? If you had compromises, they may still be partially in place and causing your issues. Some of them are rooted so deep it's almost impossible to clean without a clean start.
On XP I did it often, as I knew the holes were rotten. |

As to your computer while playing games, the age of the computer, and it's performance play a part. Back 6 years ago or so, I never suspended BOINC, unloaded AV software las, or the like, never needed to. However my last magor upgrade was in 2005 (stupid economy), and the machine which was top of the line then, had slowly become obsolete over the years. And as games came to use more resources, the performance came to hit. At first there was turning graphics down, or things that could be done in settings; but eventually the box was showing it's age.
Then in 2010 my desktop died, and I'm now on a laptop which though it has a duel core (more box then was a unicore Athlon 64), due to Intel graphics (vs the Radeon 9600 I had bought in Dec 04), the frame rates actually went DOWN. And this in spite of having 2 GB instead of 1 GB of memory, and a bit of a beefier CPU in the lappy....
All in all, if I have BOINC loaded, and load something like WoW (which isn't the most resource intensive game out there), I'm sitting at around 90+ % CPU utilization, and with the slower hard drive in this laptop, performance is killed.
Your options are pretty much what mine have been, unload BOINC, and depending on how good your machine is you might still be wanting better performance (I practically need it to do much of the level of raiding I was doing previously); else get a new machine. But that also means money, which is easier said then done in todays markets; for many.... _________________

So, when going to refresh the queue on this here lappy; I got the following:
Quote: | 12/20/2011 4:17:20 PM | DistributedDataMining | update requested by user
12/20/2011 4:17:26 PM | | Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
12/20/2011 4:17:28 PM | | Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.
|
Not sure how long this has been, or how long it will remain the case.... _________________

Thanks for all the suggestions.
Gonna take this one on board by Pooh

Maybe this will solve the software issues I have with JAVA.
Its not a resource conflict at the end of the day, its a software issue. There is no jitter when playing games even with leading edge stuff. When I have Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search GIMPS running which really stretches the Puter hardware as far as heat and resources are concerned the only thing that happens is slight jitter on high end stuff. Have a pretty much up to the bleeding edge proc. AMD 1100T 3333Mhz 6 core clocked to 3726Mhz.
So gonna leave it here for now 'Guys N Guls' if you are happy to and when I get my next pay check in January I will buy Win 7 so that I can install more memory. Currently only able to run 4 Gig mem and want to run this board at its max if possible of 16Gb. _________________ What is that in the Shrubbery?
