So the other day I somehow stumbled across a new LHC project that CERN is testing. It seems that the old LHC@home project is a lost cause or something because they didn't revive it but instead stood up an entirely new project. It is very... "different"
They have a custom execution environment set up in a small Scientific Linux virtual machine image. You have to install VirtualBox 4.1 before attaching to the project. Then it downloads their machine image (a couple hundred MB I think) and fires it up under VirtualBox to do the work.
I ran in to some problems at first. I think there were some VirtualBox error messages that popped up and I didn't see them or something. I completely shut down BOINC and the virtual machine and started everything back up and now it seems to be working. Work units take a full day to complete. I have two of them under my belt and a third one running now.
For the reasons above, I wouldn't recommend this project to any sane people. Or anyone who hasn't worked with VirtualBox before. I suspect the second criteria will eliminate more people here than the first.
There is at least one other knight on the project. If you want to be adventerous, the URL with general information about the project is: http://lhcathome.web.cern.ch/LHCathome/Physics/ and the actual BOINC server (and project attach URL) is http://boinc01.cern.ch/test4theory. The Knights can be found at http://boinc01.cern.ch/test4theory/team_display.php?teamid=52

WHAT?
I sincerely hope that you are not suggesting any of us Proud Kannigats are sane Sir.... Huurummpphh

WE HAVE A PROBLEM. WE BELIEVE SOME "ROGUE" SYSTEMS ARE SUCKING OUR QUEUES DRY AND THUS OVERLOADING THE SUPPLY OF JOBS TO EVERYONE ELSE.
Please be patient - we will try and fix this as soon as possible.
Until this problem is understood, we have disabled the creation of new jobs and users for the moment. As soon as the system is recovered, the work units flow will be restored.

Detach and re-attach to LHC Classic V1 and you should get some WU's... Server status says over 115K tasks ready to send... Let's smash some particles to smithereens!

Detach and attach again if you have problems

Please detach from the project and attach again to the project URL on this page if you get scheduler errors. By mistake, a reference to our old server had been cached on the Boinc client side, and therefore it may be necessary to re-initialise clients following a server move at CERN. Sorry for this glitch.
Long Live LHC!

The current application version is 7.01 so make sure WUs are running that.
Official up to date page for the project is here http://lhcathome2.cern.ch/test4theory/
I've been running a few WUs from it recently and getting some good credit out of them. currently 99 tasks ready to send and 3,567 in progress. Enjoy the particles guys.
oh also make sure your virtual box is a 4.1.x version. my latest and greatest version is 4.1.4 and it works gooooood _________________

Trying to get this to work without much success. WU's error after a few seconds and no indication that Virtual Box (V. 4.1.6) set up any VM's. ???
Already had to install updated Boinc then re-install without protected mode. Grrrr.... |

When you install virtualbox make sure you install the network drivers as well when its asks you so that the whole thing will work right. If its working correctly then when boinc gets a WU it will start up VB and start the real WU from there. _________________

I re-installed Virtual Box to make sure the drivers are in place. Don't see any difference, no VM's set up, but it's difficult to tell 'cuz of the following restriction.

Hmm, that could because the WUs are supposed to last ~24 hrs. Although you're not getting any VB WUs. I would head over to their forum and ask there as they are very helpful and should be able to help you find the problem

I turned a unit in successfully which I completed last night, so dunno.... But yeah the old project's web URL changed, and it kept bugging me to reattach... I just hadn't got to it previously....
Ideally the classic will retain our old credits and build upon it; but who knows... Well until they re-attach that is Unless someone is running multiple VMs on their box, no idea how they're sucking up all the tasks, as they restrict one to downloading one per box. In some ways, I do wish they'd ease the restriction somewhat for multi-core CPUs; but supposedly they will do something for multi-core CPUs in the future. Multi-core procs are like almost all of them sold today, I don't think Intel and AMD make many uni-core procs anymore, that get put into modern PCs....
Edit, yeah my old account page was migrated over to their new server and it retains the old stats.... _________________

This laptop is so old; taunting on it isn't fun.... Now if I had the money for a new computer :p I could even build one, if I only had the money for parts
Actually the stupid thing, the battery on it is so old, it can't run more then 3 mins on a battery charge, and the build in monitor is dead, meaning have to use an external monitor to well... Laptop it is, but portable it isn't exactly as such anymore _________________

I have similar problems with two laptops - I use a free program, called Team Viewer, that allows me online access from anywhere - In house here, I go thru the network - On my sister's PC, I go thru the Internet - Free, easy, and no special attention is needed - I can even update and reboot if necessary from miles away _________________
