Although only rarely, but such WUs can still arrive on your machine. Cool If that should happen, make sure you don not run multiple of these in parallel unless you know exactly what you are doing, i.e. RAM-wise...
The problem here is that BOINC lacks a mechanism to properly estimate hardware requirements (especially RAM) when single-threaded applications queue up - they are basically started according to deadline judgements which is quite primitive.

Michael.

About how much RAM do these mega WU's need? How many before one should be concerned? The 4 systems I'm crunching RNA with all have 8GB, 2 quad-core, 2 hex-core, no hyper-threading.

The current batch running use far less than Firefox. Cool

These take around 2.3-3 GB per WU. With an 8 GB quad core machine and appropriately set swap space, you might be lucky to complete 4 in parallel, although I would strongly recommend to abort computation of any large (!) WU in excess of three because sometimes, a crash of one of these affects the others depending on the machine. I have an 955BE with 8 GB of RAM and that one does finish 3 in parallel. The hexacore and i7xxx pseudo-octacores should accordingly be watched even more closely. Note that these WUs do not pemanently occupy the maximum RAM. This is just a peak demand, so it is possible to run quite some of these unless they all reach peak demand at the same time. Cool People with quad cores and just 2 GB RAM, however, will definetely watch this type of WU crash. But: There is only one type of these and currently only few are roaming around.

Michael.

How does swap page and swap file affect these large WU's?

I have 6 cores running at 3629.69Mhz with 4 GB of 1333Mhz ram.

My swap page is set at maximum available disk space.

Virtual disk space is also set at maximum.

Set these parameters so that if any projects needs any resources on my puter it can use anything it needs. My use of the machine is minimal in terms of the programs I run unless I am doing photo editing when resources may be a bit tight.

Are there any better settings that I could use to make the system faster and shrub more?

Not noticed any WU's clashing or system slow down due to any bottle necks.

Currently set BOINC to only deliver the XXL WU's and have had 6 constantly in process for about 15 days now

I second that motion....I have 3 crunchers that are producing invalid results...those 3 are being pulled off the project...16 cores going bye-bye.....

Sure your RAM is OK? Invalid WUs have become quite rare nowadays and often enough are an indication for a malfunctional machine. Cool
If you post details about crashed WUs, please click the "show details button" before you post a screenshot. That would help me in quickly checking whether that is a WU of general difficulty or not. And please also include some details on your hardware (OS, CPU type, RAM amount)

As said before, the "Monster WUs" are extremely rare if not absent at present. Wink

We are currently experiencing some sort of a database error which can be taken care of this evening.

Can you make sure all our WUs are worth double?

Database crash resolved
You might have noticed a recent problem with our server. We have fixed it. Now we are in the process of moving on to a whole new bunch of projects as announced earlier. Die kürzlich aufgetretenen Probleme mit dem Server konnten behoben werden und wir sind nun dabei, auf die bereits angekündigten neuen Projekte umzustellen. Michael. 31 May 2011 16:50:50 UTC ·

Computer 11509 is a non OCed i7-950 with 6gb of RAM and 3 GPUs. I only am doing the S WUs on all my machines. I know the PC is solid, as I have done various LLR projects with it at Prime Grid and have never thrown an error.

We will take a look at it.
Although comparably rarely used, the OS is fine (I am using the same) and has not given us any trouble yet.
Are you running a virus scanner on that machine?
Could you please upgrade your BOINC client from the older version you are currently using to the recommended current one?
We have indications that your machine deletes output files and I am unsure what could be the reason for this.

Michael.
