Hadn't thought about social networking-type sites, nor have I ever worked with one. I was thinking more along the lines of portals like Simple Machines or phbb3 Portal.
Maybe something like social networking could be a good idea. I vote green! _________________

That's what I was thinking. Security is better and more personalization. _________________

looks good shoe, but please change the colour scheme, that may unduly put people off, some thing a little more neutral perhaps!
what about hosting on the Ni server that runs the current forum.... _________________ Oh, it's blessed are the meek!, Well I'm glad they'll get something as they have a hell of a time!

The scheme was intentionally ugly, just to rile YOU up!
I consider this a successful test - we could move to such a platform and gain a lot of features. The worst thing about Ning is that the forum portion of it is weak compared to what we have now.
As to putting it on our server, this might be done with an open source platform such as Elgg. The real issue here is getting it done, and that cannot be forced on our present Admins, who are busy people and reluctant to make more work for themselves. The advantage to a hosted platform such as Ning is that it bypasses some of that administrative burden.

The forum on Ning is sort of weak, but I like the other features. We could scout out a few more options before we commit to anything. _________________

I agree, the forum sure doesn't seem as beefy. I thought I saw somewhere that the admin could add categories, which would help. It just seems that the forum is the core of the group right now.
I do like the chat feature. I wonder if it is a stand-alone thingy or if we could hook up to the irc channel frequented by the other admins.
One thing of note, even though this forum can't disply .php images, ning can. I plopped a couple onto my page (the new pics that Bok made for PG/Yoyo badges) and it worked.
edit - p.s. I just saw this article... http://mashable.com/2010/04/18/ning-alternatives/ Looks like ning is going towards fees-for-all. _________________

I've just spent (wasted/frittered) an hour going through that article.
For me, BuddyPress looks good, written as a WordPress app. As well as "normal" blog/forum facilities, there are lots of plug-ins available, e.g. a wiki (could be useful to build up a project listing, FAQ's etc.), galleries (still/movie/audio), post ratings, CAPTCHA, moderation & move topic facilities, e-mail notifications, location maps, etc., etc. (7 pages of 'em).
Lovd By Less also seems pretty good, written with Ruby-on-Rails, but without the user pug-in contributions.

Would anybody want to see a couple sample sites I put together? I had a little time and decided to do a little experimenting. I got curious and wanted to see what a couple of these software actually looks like. I tried my hand at Simple Machines and XOOPS.
If you want to see them, I could post the addresses. _________________

I'm sorta out of time for the present (he said, posting from work at 10 pm), but we got a little bit done. What's the next step?

I suppose we should narrow our search. Should we go with Ning, which is kinda fancy and hosted but will be a paid service? Do we go the Social Networking route that seem to be limited in forums? Or the forum route that seem to be limited in social networking, but could convert our current board? There seem to be many download-and-install software items, but not so much hosted software. I tend to prefer SMF, I think some of the security issues could be minimized with the proper mods and we could convert this board and still use the url. It would be a little work setting things up though.
Too many questions! I'm getting myself all confused! _________________

I have just found the NIng! It is interesting. I must explore it further. Has any decision been made on the time to make a decision? _________________ Fetch me the Holy Hand Grenade!

Moving to this new pricing plan in July... http://about.ning.com/announcement/?xg_source=www.ning.com
First level - $19.95/yr for only 150 members (we could surpass this if it turns into our main Orbiting Fortress)
Second level - $199.95/yr unlimited members, use your own domain, use chat, pages, groups, events...
Third level - $499.95/yr - ability to upload music and videos, premium support, remove ning links... _________________

Thanks for the info stooper. So. I guess the next question is, what level do we need? _________________

So, I see the ning site is still active. SHoE, did you pay out of pocket to keep it up? Should we pass the hat to cover some costs? Maybe we should start to play over there more often and really start kicking the tires.
edit: Nevermind, just saw the note on the site: This Ning Network will go offline if a plan hasn't been selected by August 20, 2010. _________________

You saw it correctly. No costs, and my hat is full of bananas anyway.
I think Ning might still be an option, but it's a bit pricey given that various sources other the same things for free (maybe not all in one spot). I'm part of another well run Third-level Ning network (http://social.consimworld.com/), but I'll now sure who/what is funding it.
Given the recent bump in activity here, I am beginning to wonder if what we REALLY need to get this forum hopping again here might be more goats. _________________ -- Have you seen my goat? |
