You're not the first to ask oddly enough. Get yourself an .edu e-mail address before Jan 7th or so.

The company handling the student pricing for M$ is www.win741.com

Like I said, you need an .edu address, the rest is really simple.

The website looks dodgy but as long as you've received the s/w and it works (and updates etc) that's good enough for me Cool .

Will it work for a clean install ?

What are they talking about when they speak of a backup DVD ? I gather the s/w comes on a CD/DVD and you install it from that media and if it breaks you can re-install it from that media (on a mac of 1 PC of course) ? Or do you d/l it ?

Sorry for the dumb questions, but after all, I'm a MORON Confused .

The website is legit, if it makes you feel better you can start at M$ and they will send you there.

The program is a download of an iso, at least I think that's what it's called. You download a DVD image that is bootable so you can burn it to your disc and go. Plus, you can purchase a regular DVD for an additional $13 which will arrive a week or two later. In any case, the product key works, the software works fine, it's perfectly genuine and all that.

Vista will upgrade, XP will not, both will allow a clean install, which is what I would recommend anyway.

The reason for the offer is that Apple released their new OS for $29 shortly after M$ announced their $300 price. Finding themselves once again the butt of the internet they came up with the student option.

Also, remember that the offer expires the first week of January or so.

You can select either Home or Professional for the same price. It takes a little digging to get to the Professional option but it is there. Follow the link about needing to network to your school or something like that.

And finally, one copy per person, otherwise I'd be all over it for my many machines and relatives etc.

I'm using Windows 7 64 and 32 bits version but I have the impression that something is wrong with the network part of it.
I am running Majestic-12 on both versions on two different machines and the intense network activity takes up a lot of processor cycles and is making the computer noticeably slower. Running WindowsXP on these machines was without problems.
I tried using newer and alternative network drivers but this didn't solve the problems. Until a very smart person runs into the same problem as I have I don't think this will be solved.

BTW, I found a win7 image that didn't require activation (32 and 64 bits).

Could that be the problem. Maybe there's something else in there.

I don't think so. I have that version only on my HTPC. And I use an activated version of 7127 build on my main computer. Would be an option, but I couldn't find any strange things besides increased processor activity when stressing the network card.

I bought my first W7 64 bit machine and have been pleasantly surprised at how efficient it is, even when crunching.

I have since updated two of my boxes, one off Vista 32 and one of XP 32. Both boxes are behaving a lot better than before. Even though I just did the XP 32 to W7 64 this past weekend, it already seems to be working faster than ever.

I have 2 more machines, 1 Vista 32 and 1 XP 32 that I plan on updating to W7 64 in the next couple of weeks.

I left the machines all alone for a few weeks just to see how efficient W7 64 was over the other OS versions.

My 2.0G laptop was out working a 2.13G with WXP 32 and the 2.4G with Vista 32. I admit I am running BOINC 64 on the machine, but I was running the exact same 32 bit project on both. The W7 machine shows a lot faster integer speed than the other OS versions. This just blew my mind that my 2.0G laptop processor could out work two desktop processors at higher speed.

I now have updated the WXP to W7 64 today and the benchmarks are in line to beat the laptop again. Alas I cannot update the Vista one (because I want to wipe and start them clean / not upgrade) and that machine has my only copy of Office which I need. I currently cannot find my media to reinstall so I need to wait until I get it, or break down and buy "another" copy (UGH!).

Oh well, 4 of the 5 machines are now W7 64 and I am impressed.
