Lesson 1:- How to take a thread off-topic without really trying.
But occasionally it can be very frustrating when some are trying to have a serious(ish) discussion.
(Back on-topic)
Having spent a second or two perusing the problem over the past few days, I've come to the conclusion that we've come up against the ancient enemy of all (wo)**mankind - Father Time. We're all getting older and there just aren't many young'uns arriving. Is that because MP doesn't have anything like the impact it had on us?
When I started BOINCing and was looking for a team, Python was the magnet that drew me in, but I very much doubt that it has anything like that impact on today's yoof; that's if they've even heard of it.
We may as well face up to it - we're ancient history, a dying breed, and before too long we may end up like the Norwegian Blue; foot nailed to the perch.
As to what we do about it - dunno, mate. We can't turn back the hands of time, much as we'd all like to. Come on, hands up - how many of us are under 50? (probably a reasonable few), under 40? (even Michelle admits to reaching that milestone), under 30? (very few, I bet).
Just my two cents worth.
(If someone offers you a penny for your thoughts and you give them your 2 cents-worth, who gets the penny change?)
[/ramble]
** That PCness is very unlike me, I must be coming down with something. Bah, Humbug.
... or is that just me getting crabby in my dotage.
There, that proves it. I'm getting old, so it stands to reason everyone else is.
And a very merry Christ mas to you all. _________________ Creationists believe they never evolved; I agree with them.

I think there's a few of us in the 'under 50' group, and it's only a matter of time until we end up in the 'under 60's.
Those poor deprived young'uns don't know what they're missing out on.
My kids didn't miss out. They're both MP fans. _________________ My brain hurts.

Yeah, I may be a noob here, but I'm an AARP-er, already in my 50s (too soon old, too late smart).
I quite like the "variety" of the discussions.
I also agree (with an earlier post) that many defacto team members may not even know that this forum exists.
I found out about it from the Stanford stats page (team banner).
I might suggest cleaning-up the "front-porch" (katrinashome.com)...there's very old postings there that may lead some to believe that there's nothing going on inside.
Just a suggestion from a noob. _________________ Click here for...KWSN F@H team summary at EOC

I never thought I'd look back on my 30s with fondness so quickly. Can I just go to the under 100 group now and save us all a lot of worry?
Surprisingly, there is still a strong interest in MP amongst the young'uns. Peruse around about the last reunion tour they did and the 13 year old girl who jumped on stage and did the Spanish Inquisition monologue. _________________ A Shrubbery for Prez. Let's put more bushes in the whitehouse.

We haven't updated Katrinashome in years.
If someone feels up for the task, you can take it up with Antigens (who owns the URL).
Otherwise we should probably just change all references to Katrinashome to point to the forum instead. |

we maybe need to do the same to http://www.kwsn.net/
that's where the SETI URL points to .......
Wabbit owns most of the BOINC teams, I own GPUGrid.... this is what I currently have as a Team description for that project...
http://www.gpugrid.net/team_display.php?teamid=23
I do link to the forum....
maybe we should have some standard wording on the boinc team descriptions? after checking Primegrid (Wabbits favourite project), that one doesn't even have a team description..... Wabbit What are you up to..... _________________ Oh, it's blessed are the meek!, Well I'm glad they'll get something as they have a hell of a time!

I thought I put in a team description for PrimeGrid, or I took it over from a Knight who refuse to put in a description.
I think having a standard URL would be nice, agreeing on what it is could make the Cliamte Talks at Copenhagen look like a peace rally.
Team descriptions should be fun and inventive, and I feel should be up to the team founder.
Recuritment threads on project forums. I used to be against this, I was in the camp we are good enough that we do not need a recuritment post. I mean we would be on the first page of stats and bot noticable. I am now coming to the realization that this might not be the case anymore, and first page of stats is not easy to get or maintain. Again it should be up to whoever gets their first, nice banners, gifs, jpgs, and general crazyness.
In terms of kwsn.net. I have no control over that, I have tried to talk about that with the original team founder on IRC, but he just wants to be a SETI portal site (really long story). I will continue to work with him about it, but I do not know enough HTML so someone who would have to work with it.
Also a thing is that many old members become well old, in internet age (think like dog years). Some go onto new experiences off line, others decide not do anymore DC projects. The thing is that you need to bring in new blood, having active Admins can be a doubled edge sword, piss them off and you are screwed if they are active, not very active ones only are around when their is an issue. Also the internet can become a bit boring after awhile.
The topic of staying on topic in threads. As an old Knight this is brand new, if are old posts survive from the first forum and from the early days of this forum, we nevered stayed on topic. EVER! I mean it would get off topic quicker than you can say M**. Wide ranging discussions from the evil penguin army, to everyday is November 7th.
katrinashome. See Sir Mildew's post about that, the only problem if you want to do daily updates is that it gets old quickly, and it is hard trying to be silly everyday like that.

A further post, appendix to my previous work.
I took a look at the stats at boincsynergy.com, even though they are not listing SETI stats right now (long thread about that). I was looking at the major projects for BOINC, I was looking at KWSN and they list member movements that happen. And I noticed something in every project KWSN has grown in size, more people joining than leaving. Though they might be as active, or only be active a bit in BOINC. While we might not be gaining as many members as other teams, we are still adding people.

there was a time about a year ago that we were adding some real heavy hitters. Many people joining in the top 100 (ask Sir Mohr) and several in the top 50 or even 25. That time seems to be past. I think but I'm not sure it was about the time we added recruitment posts in several projects. I can't say that was the reason but it was a real coincidence...
Look, I really think that we need a at least quarterly news letter.... Unfortunately, I am not the guy for that, I leave for work on monday morning and come home on friday nite, so there is not much I can do to help with it, That being said 4 times a year is not so much for a page or 2 letter that communicates with the membership. At least birthdays and milestones, how we did in PotM's and Challenges... this should not be too much of a drag if we distribute it to several knights, and I will contribute if asked...... not sure how much I am capable of as I am not a computer guru...
lets stop talking about why this team is in the doldrums and actually put forward some ideas for consideration....

Things that can be down, from quickest to long term (from my POV):
1. Changing katrinashome to make it our entrance portal, welcoming both BOINC and non-BOINC producers, relinking all teams to the katrinashome site as are entrance. (Someone takes charge of this, Sir Antigens?)
2. Recuritment threads on various project sites. Can be handle by team founder or someone else. Someone take the initiave for a project and let other Knights know which one they will do. (Open to everyone, be creative and original.)
2. Quarertly newsletter. A new and in my opinion a good idea. If several Knights are willing to supply a column or two I can work with this. (Certified book critic talking). Does not have to be long. Logistic wise do we email it to all Knights or only ones registered for the Forum. (Looking for a main leader, I am not that great with technology, but I am willing to participate.)

Very good ideas. And talking about the website specifically, as someone said, it gets to be very difficult to keep up with on-going news items unless it is automated. But if you incorporate news quarterly, it does not overwhelm the webmaster or whoever takes up the task. This would coincide nicely with the creation of a newsletter.
I created and maintain a website for a non-profit group I'm involved in and try to keep a running list of recent news, and I find myself often falling behind since it's not a job, it's a hobby. That's just one thing to look out for. From my experience, it starts out great and fun and you are ready willing and able to keep plugging in stuff to the website. But then something comes up, and you don't get around to it, and before you know it you are updating less often. So, you start trying to find ways to make it a more general site at the same time coming up with ways to make it automated so that visitors still feel like it's 'alive'. That's where RSS feeds, forums and shoutboxes would come in handy.
But using Katrina's would be a great 'front face' opportunity. It just needs a little cleaning, updating and knock the cobwebs out.
p.s. where does the name katrinashome come from? _________________

THWAAACK!!! Old is a state of mind, not an age. Now go and find my walker for me, sonny.

I believe you are correct.
Papa Smurph wrote: | At least birthdays ... |
You just had to say the 'b' word, didn't you. I have absolutely no idea where the list is, and only an in-depth search of pre-ubuntu/fedora/ubuntu/fedora/ubuntu/xp backups will find it. It's there somewhere. Another problem with birthdays is that half the people on the list are MIA or quit the team. I'll see if I can find it and clean it up but it could take some time.
The newsletter idea is a good one. It will keep those who don't frequent the forum up to speed with what is happening. The trick there is to work out who to send it to. Every team member on every project would be a mammoth task. You'd have to work out a way of putting out feelers to see who would be interested in receiving one and who wouldn't. Opt-in to a mailing list sort of thing.
I'd be happy to contribute to a newsletter with a refreshed and more current birthday list, as well as helping to put it together. MS Publisher might be handy for doing that if you could save it in a generic format that everyone would be able to open.
As for sending out a large volume of email like that, well I have no idea how that would work. Something like Topica maybe but I'm not sure whether that is free or not.
Sending out from a member's email address could lead to being banned by their isp for 'spamming'. _________________ My brain hurts.

what we need to do is attack the top four projects, SETI, Einstein, Rosetta, and Climate prediction.
A bit like POTM, but where we all try to get in the top 10 by RAC, wand wll promote the forum in our profiles, you never know we might get noticed and some of those members start visiting... _________________ Oh, it's blessed are the meek!, Well I'm glad they'll get something as they have a hell of a time!

Tell me about it... I'll be back! I'm gaining on # 100. It should take me a few weeks/years to hijack Big Blue & shurbberize it. Then the top 10 has to look out!

Kinda off topic, sorta,... but this is the most used thread right now so
We need a report button, or call Moderator button....
There was a post earlier in the week that really should have been deleted immediately but there is no way to contact someone that is able to do it.
Additionally our newest user is "Candy Edith" and she is without a doubt a Spammer, However since I can't report her she will surely defecate all over the forum soon, and there is nothing I can do about it..... _________________ a.k.a. Licentious of Borg.........Resistance Really is Futile.......
