Here's the first cut at the December voting ballot. I took the previous one, deleted Leiden and added POEM & Yoyo. Let me know if we need to add anything or delete projects that are unstable, cheapskates with points, or out of work. See KWSN team stats, RAC etc. in my sig file. The ballot is limited to 19 choices, so I deleted SETI for now...

I thought we'd try to close the voting on 11/24 or 25. That will give U.S. crunchers time to attach to the new project prior to traveling for Thanksgiving. We seem to be ready to move on from Leiden anyway...

I recently looked at Sztaki again (been trying to get all my projects up to 10K) and it seems like they only have 32-bit apps. They say 64 is there, but nothing comes through, forums have no support from admins.

NQueens was recently removed from the vault for inactivity.

MilkyWay might have work by December, they have server parts on order and project is down until who-knows...

Prime Grid has another challenge in December, but again, I would prefer not to crunch primes all month, just do the challenge.

Anybody know anything about QMC? The charts look like it gives good credit, but I've never tried.

QMC are genetic WUs basically and they can tend to be long, though you can get a lot of points for just one WU.

nqueens is down hard still for about three weeks now. Climate prediction may be too boring for most.

Maybe we could tackle one of the new projects for a month BEFORE it gets added to the vault? NFS or Goldbach maybe?

I think I'd knock out Climate (WUs much too long, way over a month), Collatz & MilkyWay (both pretty flaky at weekends, and really only for GPUs) and NQueens (down).
Another non-vault project that's running well at the moment is UCT:Malaria (runs Malaria Control WUs, but much smaller project, hence progress easier).

Judging by the response to this months PotM, it might be worth adding an option for a month off in Dec, normal service to be resumed next year.

The main thing with Laiden had been that several WUs have tended to fail; and then those that don't are real cheapskates in credits. Vs. Milkyway optimized CPU client, they offer < 1/2 the credits for the same time spent. 23 credits for 1 hr 20 mins crunched seems extremely skimpy (I'd say that for anything below 20 credits in an hour, tbh). Now throw failed WUs on top of that...

This said, I had attached and tried several; though on the failures I'm also stuck on dialup atm, so failures aren't good with a connection that isn't always on. This said, climate is probably not a good POTM, though it is something I'm using as filler, for those times I'm asleep where otherwise I might run out of work before I can dial out to the Internet again.

QMC, is fairly long WUs, though they do pay better then many projects. With Milkyway having hardware issues, supposedly due to construction ruining their hard drives, I'd set it to gather some results. Some might like/not like the size of the WUs though. Cosmology was a bit of a memory hog, though as I remember payed a lil better then some projects, which is fitting considering it uses more RAM then some projects, not just the CPU. This said, on quad core systems, it might be a little harder (if all 4 cores have one running on it simultaniously).

Milkyway isn't bad on the CPU for those who don't have a gfx card that can run it on a GPU, with about 53 credits for 1 hr 20 mins crunch time (that's about over 40 credits per hour), using the CPU's SSSE3+ opti app. This said, and however good that is for the CPU, those who run it on their GPU probably wouldn't want to run it again on their CPU also.

After a low credit returning POTM (and POEM, though not as low as Laiden, is lower then some); I think a month on a better paying project in credits, however we do it, might be a good idea. This said, many of the best paying projects (like Edge) are work short supply; so we'd need a good paying project, that hopefully we could gain some ground on, that will also have work to help make up for some of the credit losses in lower paying POTMs.

A revised list follows. If someone can figure a point rating such as "X points per hour", I'll add that along with the Stomp Factor, etc.

Removed NQueens and Milky Way for lack of work. Climate takes too long. Collatz is GPU only. SETI previously removed. Added NFS and "Vacation". The strategery with NFS is we won't earn Vault points now, but when it is added, we'll make a big jump...

Well, something that rates credit grants would definitely be useful info; as one could look at over-takes along with what credit we're likely to get for an expenditure of our machines.

Only touchy point I see; is for instance when I'm looking at the number of hours it takes to complete tasks, I'm looking at it on my Athlon 64 3500+ under winXP Professional 32-bit. Obviously different CPUs will perform differently, and as such will have different completion times for the same work done. The person who had a comparison of x-times the credit granted by seti optimized probably came close to the same thing I'm looking at; though I'm looking at it relative to my own CPU itself.

I like QMC just because they support 64 bit apps. (I only have 1 32 bit machine) and Linux (12 out of 14 machines are Linux).
I've run it before and it's not a bad project.
