Once again, a brilliant loonie thinks he will improve a project, but ends up wrecking it:
Quote: | Project Down Due to Unauthorized Applications
July 12, 2009
Due to at least one unauthorized application being run, the work generator has been shut down. It will not be turned back on until the validator has been changed to ensure fully tested applications are being run and I check previously returned results to double check their validity. |

Finally snagged a few WUs for the team! Only four, but then again, we ARE still on Enigma, y'know? _________________

Thanks for the reminder, I'd just about forgotten about this project.
Checked and found I'd got a few (dozen!), so we'll see how they get on.

Got one workunit, says it will take 55 hours to complete. Well lets see how long it will really take.

I've finished 3 or 4, they seem to be taking a tad over 9 minutes on a GTS250, but no sign of any credit yet. _________________ Creationists believe they never evolved; I agree with them.

Right, then; credit has appeared.
9½ minute (on a GTS250) generates ~75 cobblies, or ~475/hour.
For comparison, Aqua was generating ~230/hr on their long 250-350 hour WUs, but dropped to a miserly 65/hr when they started their new short 20 minute WUs. GPUGrid gives a much more healthy 350/hour.
But the new winner appears to be Collatz.
Pile in lads while the goings good.
P.S. checkpoint beat us all to the point and finished a big batch of work, but most of them errored out. I think he's using an ATI unit, as the shrubber details don't show a GPU. _________________ Creationists believe they never evolved; I agree with them.

I'm in. Main thing of note about this project is that its CAL client does not require double precision so if you have any previously idle cards, as long as they're listed on THIS PAGE you can join in the fun.
The list is rather extensive, especially when compared to the relatively small number of double precision cards. I, for instance, am running Collatz on my computer at work which had an HD4650 that isn't double precision. w00t for more points! Heck, it'll even run on the HD3x00 series chipsets (i.e. onboard graphics) lol.
Yay for people figuring out the CAL/Brook stuff.
Edit: Looks like my first GPU WU on this HD4650 is going to take just under 20 minutes. I'll update when it's done and posted. _________________

Dang my one WU will take several hours to complete compared to your quick times.

It's a learning process lol. Collatz + HD4650 + GPU-Z = Corrupt WUs. Collatz + 2WUs at once + HD4650 = VPU crash + Corrupt WUs. BOINC 6.6.36 doesn't handle Collatz any better than MilkyWay either.
Have only had one finish successfully and it's still pending validation. Got plenty of WUs though. _________________

Confirmation of what checkpoint found - they haven't got ATI cards properly sorted yet. I've only tried it on nVidia so far, and haven't seen any duff units.
I may try it on a 4850 next week, after I've reached the 10 mil in MW; I want to give today's addition to the farm (another 4850) a bit to bed in. _________________ Creationists believe they never evolved; I agree with them.

I am glad it has checkpointing, as it has just restarted after some Yoyo and Eignma work.

Yeah, having a lot of VPU crashes and such. Documenting it in their forums but here's some tips to anyone wanting to try it:
1) Avoid GPU utilities like the Catalyst Control Panel or GPU-Z. In MilkyWay they make your system slow and unresponsive. In Collatz they cause a VPU crash and corrupt WUs (that still run to completion before dying).
2) On my HD4650 at least, avoid -n2. 2 WUs running at once = VPU crash and corrupted WUs.
3) If you suspend WUs re-enable them all at once or just one at a time. Doing them in groups seems to always cause a VPU crash (though no corruption yet).
That said, more points from this system is ok by me. _________________

I have 2 WUs. They are listed as going to take 26:17 and 76:13 (hours:minutes). We'll see. I tried to go to their site to up my work allocation, but the site seems to be down... _________________ Fetch me the Holy Hand Grenade!

From what I've read in the forums it won't be worth it unless you're running 64 bit. The 32 bit apps, even optimized, run at less than half the speed. _________________

OK, own up.
Who broke it.
The sites been down for a good few hours now; Ive got ~100 shrubs trying to upload, and I'm half-way through my cache - only about 4-5 hours work left in stock.
On the plus side, the last time I looked (~8 hours ago) KWSN had risen to the dizzy heights of the low 20's (RAC ~15th).

And now, for something completely different....
July 27, 2009, 20:48 CST
Version 1.10 of the app has been released for Win32, Win64, Linux and CUDA. ATI (CAL) apps are also available for Win32 and Win64. Any results submitted from previous versions will NOT be granted credit as the output of the new version is no longer compatible with the previous version. So, if you have any workunits from prior to v1.10, you can go ahead and abort them. |
Is there a problem here? _________________
