Collatz Conjecture, continuing where 3x+1 left off. It started ~3 weeks ago and was opened up to all and sundry last week.
Web Site.
A BOINC project, with apps for Win, Linux & MAC, plus CUDA apps for Win & Linux, plus optimised apps for Win (courtesy Crunch3r) and also ATI apps for Win (courtesy Gipsel of MilkyWay fame).
I think this is the first project to cover virtually all bases.
John Galt has started a team, but no KWSN credit yet. The scoring looks big (SUSA has nearly 3 million already).

July 12, 2009, 10:59 CST
Due to at least one unauthorized application being run, the work generator has been shut down. It will not be turned back on until the validator has been changed to ensure fully tested applications are being run and I checked previously returned results to double check their validity. |
Loonie hackerz....
OK can anyone 'splain the following? Do work units calculate by inserting values such as 3 X 1 +1 = 4 then 3 X 2 + 1 = 7 and so on 'til infinity? What the heck does that accomplish, what is the so called conjecture?

We take any whole number n greater than 0. If n is even, we halve it (n/2), else we do "triple plus one" and get 3n+1. The conjecture is that for all numbers this process converges to 1. Hence it has been called "Half Or Triple Plus One", sometimes called HOTPO. _________________

This sounds like a project just for us. Completely useless math. I will sign up but there is a supreme lack of work.

Though why Sir John of Galt has not written anything in the description for the team is odd.

First time I have ever been in first place on the team. At least until work starts coming.

Absolutely yes and a team member recruitment thread as well while you're at it.
How about this one?
Welcome to The Knights Who Say Ni!'s official recruitment thread.
We are a bunch of very silly people that have a common interest. Monty Python, the quest for world domination and the search for the Holy Shrubbery.
Our team has been around since the SETI Classic days and has remained in the upper ranks since then and is made up of many extremely knowledgable and helpful people.
Please visit our Orbiting Fortress and check us out. You may not want to leave.
It's the one I did at MW_GPU. It really doesn't look like we're ever gonna get to put it to use there. PLease feel free to edit, use or not use . It's up to you. _________________

Still no work, we are always helpful though it is doubtful whether our help truly helps anything.

Thanks for the explanation Clark, but I still don't see how the conjecture "that for all numbers this process converges to 1" could possibly be true. However, reading some more, I came across this:
Quote: | Now, form a sequence by performing this operation repeatedly, beginning with any positive integer, and taking the result at each step as the input at the next. |
OK, maybe I can visualize how that is true. Starting with say 1 Trillion and halving it, then halving that result and so on I guess that would approach 1. Even if an odd number is reached and it gets "tripled +1", I can imagine a long term trend downward towards 1... |
