In the closest election yet, Enigma is the winner!
Quote:
The M4 Project is an effort to break 3 original Enigma messages with the help of distributed computing. The signals were intercepted in the North Atlantic in 1942 and are believed to be unbroken. Ralph Erskine has presented the intercepts in a letter to the journal Cryptologia. The signals were presumably enciphered with the four rotor Enigma M4 - hence the name of the project.

Well actually 2 of the 3 have been broken...

Despite thinking this project is a complete waste of time, and the fact it breaks Mundaywebs stats, I'm joining with my 2 home machines. It'll take awhile for my machines to run down their existing queues.

As of right now:
Total credit: 0
Recent average credit: 0.00

Edit: I'd like to add the sort've-working timers and progress bar are a nice touch too. The Athlon 64 optimized app didn't work on my X2 3800+ just FYI. The Core2 app appears to be working on my Q9300 fine.

Link to optimized apps: http://www.enigmaathome.net/forum_thread.php?id=17

Update: Also a bit stingy with credits, at least on the normal apps. X2 3800+ wouldn't run the optimized, and on the regular app it's first WU is 0.0026 credits/second (~11,350 seconds = 38 requested = 30 granted). Spinhenge on the same machine, also not optimized, is getting 0.0049 (~2,830 seconds = 10 requested = 14 granted). Granted, Spinhenge is a fixed credit per unit setup, so that's probably a useless comparison. The optimized app might be significantly better, it hasn't finished yet and the timer is all over the place.

Update 2: Ok, if you don't have a 64 bit setup it's just about not worth it. If you do, hook it up. Running the Core2 optimized app my first WU from the Q9300 is 1,835 seconds = 15 requested = 26 granted for 0.0141/second. Same system on Rosetta 8,168 seconds = 59 requested = 71 granted = 0.0086. Nice! [Total credit: 57, Recent average credit: 5.59]

Update 3: [1:27am GMT-8] Aaaaaaand... we broke it. Sites down, scheduler is unresponsive. Whoops.

It happens lol. They've got about 8 hours until I check again. If they're not up by then I'm letting my other projects queue a days work just in case.

Edit: On another side-note, every QMC WU I've finished since adding Enigma has hit 100% and then reported a computation error. I'm also no longer running work on the 4th CPU core and I've no idea why.

Edit: Decided to try some tinkering before just dropping it. Have QMC bleeding down it's last WU, and set Cosmo to do the same, which leaves WCG, Rosetta, Enigma, and MW. I'll let that config run until I get home from work and see where we stand.

OK, I'm feeling like a big nooby right now, but I've never messed around with optimized apps or anything. I can't seem to find the project folder in order to replace some of these files. Embarassed
I found the boinc folder in "program files" - doesn't seem to be the right one. Anybody here want to give the new guy some pointers?

Just use BOINC and when you are prompted for the address, enter

http://www.enigmaathome.net/

I always let the BOINC Software put the files where it wants, no
muss-no fuss!

If an Optimized App is available, maybe you could us it instead.
Otherwise, just use BOINC right out of the box and enter the address
above to Attach to it.

No reason to think there's any pressure on ya to use the Optimized
Applications!

We appreciate your Shrubbin' Sir Stooper!

I've already been shrubbing enigma today (straight out of the box). But with my one little shrubber, it would be nice to let it be "All That it Can Be"!!

You know, if I can get it to go faster....

You are obviously using a BOINC version in the 6.x.x, which hides the projects folder.

Search for the folder 'projects' without the quotes, making sure that you look in hidden files and folders. If you are using XP, it is easiest found using Search from the Start Menu. If you have the 'new' Windows search, click on 'Click here to use search companion' on the left side. In Search COmpanion, click on 'All files and folders', 'More advanced options', and check system folders and the hidden files boxes. Now it should find the projects folder. Open the folder in the search pane, open the www.enigmaathome.net folder, and follow the instructions for installing the apps.

If you're running in protected mode it will be in Documents and Settings, All Users, Program Data, BOINC, Projects unless you specified a different location. It may also be in the root of your system drive under ProgramData\BOINC (ProgramData may be hidden).

As for how to use the optimized apps, it's easier on some projects than others. This one isn't very easy, and the optimized apps are a bit hinky, so I wouldn't blame you for not being ccomfortable messing with it. If you do, just let me know and I'll try to walk you through it.

I found it in there. Did all the stuff for optimization and am running it now. I guess I lost the two WUs I was running prior to optimization to computation errors, but we'll see how the rest go. Back up and running now.

Yeah the work units are bound to an app version, so when the version changes the manager scraps the previous work units because they say they're for a different app. Once it sees the new app it downloads work, which is the same work as before hehe, but runs it on the new/optimized app. Congrats on getting it sorted. Smile

On an unrelated note, I just got word that my home network is down, so that's gonna play havoc on my stats for sure. MW at the very least since it only queues about 20 minutes of work even though it's set to 2 days. 4 hours until I go home still too, bah.

I'm fixing to detatch from our POTM. I keep gettting checksum errors when downloading new work, I've tried detatch and reattach so I could see if it was a problem with the optimized client but I get the same error.
It just isn't worth it. If any of you have a suggestion I'll try it and see if it will work. Otherwise i'm going to do GeneticLife.

I just had to abort a bunch of WU's that had a download failed error and then all the replacement WU's also failed. I've seen this happen with an Enigma WU or three now and then, but this time there were 19 in a row. Very irritating Mad

I haven't had any enigma work for hours because of this. I posted in their forum under Checksum but no luck yet. Just someone else with the same issue so far. I tried the e-mail to TJM but for some reason it's not working either.

I'll check back tomorrow when I get home from work to see if anything has changed. If you have any luck let me know so I can try again.

My non-optimized X2 3800+ is churning away happily, and for whatever reason got sent a BUUUUNCH of WUs (35 counting the 2 running). So far all results except the one when I tried to change apps is complete & valid (8 done, 234 credit).

My Core2 optimized Q9300 quad is running so much other stuff it's hard to tell, especially since my home network was down most of the day. As far as the app goes all units except for the dropped one going to the optimized client complete & valid (26 done, 614 credit). But, it's only got 2 WUs from the project left. Looks like the manager hasn't asked for any, but SIMAP did fire up so it's busily hogging those WUs (and the server is already saying out of work lol).

Set WCG to No New Tasks, guess we'll see what happens as it churns through the queued stuff.

All the work I had cached went through and validated. I can't get any new work. Only Failed downloads with checksum errors and |Enigma@Home|Message from server: No work sent.
