Joe Montanna and Dan Marino I have heard of them. Isn't one a breed of sheep and the other a US state?
Never heard of any the others and neither have any of my sons. We're guessing one is the inventor of a famous console game.
Why does one of the players bend over and throw the egg between his legs while the guy behind him stares at his bum then the others run straight at each other for a cuddle? _________________ Crabbypatty

I enjoy comparing baseball and football:
Baseball is a nineteenth-century pastoral game.
Football is a twentieth-century technological struggle.
Baseball is played on a diamond, in a park. The baseball park!
Football is played on a gridiron, in a stadium, sometimes called Soldier Field or War Memorial Stadium.
Baseball begins in the spring, the season of new life.
Football begins in the fall, when everything's dying.
In football you wear a helmet.
In baseball you wear a cap.
Football is concerned with downs - what down is it?
Baseball is concerned with ups - who's up?
In football you receive a penalty.
In baseball you make an error.
In football the specialist comes in to kick.
In baseball the specialist comes in to relieve somebody.
Football has hitting, clipping, spearing, piling on, personal fouls, late hitting and unnecessary roughness.
Baseball has the sacrifice.
Football is played in any kind of weather: rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog...
In baseball, if it rains, we don't go out to play.
Baseball has the seventh inning stretch.
Football has the two minute warning.
Baseball has no time limit: we don't know when it's gonna end - might have extra innings.
Football is rigidly timed, and it will end even if we've got to go to sudden death.
In baseball, during the game, in the stands, there's kind of a picnic feeling; emotions may run high or low, but there's not too much unpleasantness.
In football, during the game in the stands, you can be sure that at least twenty-seven times you're capable of taking the life of a fellow human being.
And finally, the objectives of the two games are completely different:
In football the object is for the quarterback, also known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! - I hope I'll be safe at home!

I think NFL is like human chess, and chess isn't a great spectator sport IMHO. Far too slow.
Badseball is ok I can watch that. But it isn't always serene
I know about Babe Ruth and Willie Mays being superstars
PS in the outside world Football is played on a football pitch
PPS Vinny Jones a none to famous footballer has been in plenty of movies.
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, Swordfish etc.
It means nothing to most people outside the UK, except here where he is fairly well known for his animal behaviour on the field of play. _________________ Crabbypatty

No more Whining about your Soccer teams, Brits
Last season they were 3-13. So that's 3 wins in 2 seasons
The Lions have finally Won at Losing. Hey a win is a win |
Maybe it's something about being too close to Lake Erie. My Browns (Clowns) finished the season without scoring an offensive touchdown in 24 quarters (new NFL record), and the streak is intact- we can try and extend it next season. Talk about something to look forward to! |
I've been convinced for awhile that Ohio teams are cursed. I'm an Ohio State grad and they haven't been stellar in big games for the past few years. At one point I had a total of a half dozen or so times that an Ohio team advanced to either a divisional or national championship only to lose in a glorious fashion. The team to break the trend was none other than the Columbus Crew, the state's only Major League Soccer (Football for everyone outside the US) team, who won the MLS cup this year. _________________

Soccer , football, gridiron or whatever you want to call it I think the one thing we can all agree on is we love our own particular sports with passion.
I know of the MLS we sometimes get goal highlights in the UK. And I hope you lot are proud of the US ladies football team, probably the best in the world.
And to clarify something, I like baseball on UK TV we get the edited highlights _________________ Crabbypatty

Quote: | Super Bowl XLIII
The Super Bowl started with a challenge between the National Football League and the American Football League. Each league had been claiming it was the best so, as a means of proving who was superior, a game was held on Jan. 15, 1967. While it was the first championship game, it was not yet called the Super Bowl.
The NFL's Green Bay Packers and the AFL's Kansas City Chiefs played in the AFL-NFL World Championship Game (later to be called Super Bowl I) at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. More than 60,000 people watched Coach Vince Lombardi lead the Packers to a 35-10 win. Bart Starr completed 16 out of 23 passes for 250 yards and two TDs, earning MVP honors.
The Packers went on to win Super Bowl II in 1968, and Starr was again named MVP. The NFL and AFL would eventually become one when the two leagues merged in 1970, retaining the National Football League name.
Vince Lombardi died of cancer in 1970 and was honored posthumously with the renaming of the World Championship Trophy to the Vince Lombardi Trophy. For many years, the Vince Lombardi Trophy was awarded to the winning team in a private ceremony inside the locker room. Since Super Bowl XXX, the trophy has been given to the victorious team's owner immediately following the game -- out on the field and in front of the fans.
While football had been around for several decades before that first world championship game, it was the Super Bowl that put the game in America's conscience. Super Bowl Sunday has now become an unofficial American holiday. |

Miami Awarded 2010 Super Bowl
The NFL awarded the 2010 Super Bowl — Super Bowl XLIV — to Miami. It is the 10th time the city, who last hosted in 2007, will play host to the championship event. Some think that it is Florida's weather that is the real winner, and I certainly can't argue with that. The fact that Tampa just hosted the 2009 Super Bowl, pretty much confirms Florida as a "super" location in my mind.
The championship game will be played February 7, 2010 at Dolphin Stadium. The stadium has a seating capacity of 75,540. Looking to obtain tickets? Good luck. The majority of Super Bowl tickets are distributed to the NFL teams, with each team receiving 17.5 percent of the tickets. The non-participating teams receive 1.2 percent; and, the host team — Miami Dolphins — will receive five percent. The remaining tickets are controlled by the NFL. It distributes those primarily to NFL affiliated companies, the broadcast network, corporate sponsors, media, charities, fans and the host committee. Only about one percent of the tickets go to fans. What fans? Lucky ones. The annual Super Bowl random drawing determines exactly which fans. Entries for the drawing will only accepted between February 1 and June 1, 2009.

Does anyone remember the Suprebowl that the Colts were in? '07. Miami. Rins for DAYS ahead of time and it poured during the game. Great Game! The weather finally had a say in the Super Bowl (at least since the '70s). The NFL intentionally selects sites so there is a better chance of good weather. Bad call in my opinion. I think that since the weather is a factor in the REST of the NFL season (or can be anyway), it should possibly be a factor for the championship game too.
I would love to watch a game where it is -20 F. or raining in Noah-like proportions. That is what makes it football. _________________ Fetch me the Holy Hand Grenade!

Would you just look at the concentration on the face of Beckham as he puts his mind to the difficult process of connecting foot to ball.
And this is a proper game played with an 'egg'. No body armour, timeouts or stopping every 5 seconds for a rest here.
Oh, and my Saracens season tickets arrived too
