Anyone active on MilkyWay willing to play go-between for me? I'm getting an error from their client but can't post on any of their forums because you need a RAC > 0 even in the support forum (which is incredibly stupid).

So here's the initial details, if someone could go make a new thread in the Windows support forum. http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/forum_forum.php?id=4

OS: Windows 7 x64 RC
BOINC: 6.6.36 x64. Was in protected mode, now reinstalled non-protected, both gave the same message.
GPU: HD4870 w/Catalyst 9.5
The 3 DLLs in System32 have been copied.
App .19f as linked from their forums and zslip. 64 bit version only.

Every unit reports:
6/22/2009 8:46:51 AM Milkyway@home Output file ps_sgr_210F5_3s_hiw_3587556_1245684312_0_0 for task ps_sgr_210F5_3s_hiw_3587556_1245684312_0 absent

http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/results.php?userid=48206

Looks like it's not finding my GPU as being supported. Need some guidance on what to do about that.

I sent you a PM. I think there are 3 files that will have to be rename from ATIxxx to AMDxxx or something like that for it to work in windows 7.
I'll copy your post above and move it to MW forum.

Those are the 3 files I mention copying in System32. I've done all the steps, and I think it's all correct it's just not detecting my GPU as being supported. Probably a vendor/BIOS issue but I can't do anything about that so I need to see if it's something easily fixed or if they want to pursue fixing it if it's a vendor ID issue or something similar.

When you dig down into the tasks this is what they report:

Code:
<core_client_version>6.6.36</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
Incorrect function. (0x1) - exit code 1 (0x1)
</message>
<stderr_txt>
Running Milkyway@home ATI GPU application version 0.19f by Gipsel
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9300 @ 2.50GHz (4 cores/threads) 3.26366 GHz (1846ms)

CAL Runtime: 1.4.283
Found 0 CAL device

No supported GPU found!

</stderr_txt>
]]>

PS: Thanks for the assist, though copying my post verbatim including bashing their forum policy probably isn't going to make them want to help me haha.

It was the truth. There should be at least one area that someone with 0 credit can post to get help. I also posted in the number crunching forum under the WINDOWS X64 topic with a link to the post where you asked to put it.
Try dropping back to Catalyst and driver version 8.12. That's what I had to do.

Can't, or at least don't really want to. I'm on Win 7, and would have to fall back to a Vista driver for that. Vista CCC drivers are one of the reasons I had to rebuild my system recently, I'd rather not go back down that road. In fact, I'm willing to lose 60,000 credits a day to avoid it.

You might try 9.2 then.

Did you rename the files?
Note on Catalyst 9.2 and up:

ATI/AMD renamed the CAL libraries with the latest driver release. To get the GPU app running,
duplicate the following files in your Windows\system32 folder (the suffix "64" applies only to
64Bit systems):

aticalrt.dll or aticalrt64.dll
aticalcl.dll or aticalcl64.dll
aticaldd.dll or aticaldd64.dll

Now Rename the copies to

amdcalrt.dll or amdcalrt64.dll
amdcalcl.dll or amdcalcl64.dll
amdcaldd.dll or amdcaldd64.dll

You should have now 6 dll files in your Windows\system32 folder, 3 named amdcal*.dll and 3 with
the name atical*.dll. A simple rename of atical*.dll to amdcal*.dll is not sufficient!

I think 9.3 was the first Win 7 release.

Everyone keeps asking that lol. The 3 original are present, and copies of them with the old names are also now present. I did that step, per the readme, before ever trying to run the app.

In reply to the update on this thread: http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/forum_thread.php?id=937#26239 (appreciate if someone could copy & paste over there for me)

The CAL interface itself appears to work, it only signals that there is no GPU. There are several reasons for that, one is the protected mode installation. I would recheck that (6.6.2x is better in my opinion than 6.6.3x). Simply disable everything called "protected" or "secure" during the installation (one may have to look at the advanced installation options).

I re-installed without the protected option, and there is no BOINC service listed any more. I uninstalled and reinstalled again to verify. There's only one check box for it during install, under advanced options. I don't have a copy of the installer older than 6.6.36, and only this and 6.4.7 are on the Berkley site.

Cluster Physik wrote:
Another possible reason is the access over a remote desktop connection blocking the access to the hardware (Windows loads a virtual display driver for that). It's the same with all other remote access tools, the only difference is that you can disable that "mirror driver" with VNC (but the screen refreshes get slower then), but it is possible to use it that way.

All "Remote" services are Manual start and not running. Remote Desktop is among them. Remote access settings is set to allow none, and allow remote assistance is also off. Not sure what else I should/can do along these lines?

Thanks, I appreciate it. This is right up our alley as it is, as far as I can recall, the silliest way to get tech support I've ever dealt with.

Latest reply (thanks in advance for the data shuffle):

6.6.21 installed, and I let it grab 6 more work units. All 6 died saying they need more permissions, which wasn't happening with .36. And guess what, that was likely the problem the entire time but .36 was suppressing the error? Might be worth forwarding that along so they can try to figure out why .36 is either not generating the correct error or isn't giving the app proper permissions.

Either way, on .21 with BOINC force run as an Administrator I see signs of life! Going to let it churn through the first 8 WUs and see if they validate when I push them back up.

Thanks for the assistance. :-)

You should be able to post on your own there now J. You have a total credit of 779 and a RAC of 76.97.
Looks like you've about got it. You got the help of the best with CP. He wrote the optimized app you're using for GPU .
