What a SHOCKER! I thought tatas@home would win for sure! I sniff another rigged election... Confused

Quote:
PrimeGrid's primary goal is to bring the excitement of prime finding to the "everyday" computer user. ... With a little patience, you may find a large or even record breaking prime and enter into Chris Caldwell's The Largest Known Primes Database as a Titan!

PrimeGrid's secondary goal is to provide relevant educational materials about primes. Additionally, we wish to contribute to the field of mathematics.

Lastly, primes play a central role in the cryptographic systems which are used for computer security. Through the study of prime numbers it can be shown how much processing is required to crack an encryption code and thus to determine whether current security schemes are sufficiently secure.

http://www.primegrid.com/

After attaching to this project, you should log into your account and edit your Prime Grid preferences. You'll find 11 sub-projects (one is a special request?) that you can select for crunching. You can run any of them now, but you should be aware of two that have long work units. I have a Woodall Prime Search (LLR) work unit that will take about 80 hours to complete. I also have a Cullen Prime Search (LLR) WU that will take about 240 hours.

Obviously we're prepping & psyching up for the Prime Grid Summer Solstice Challenge which begins on June 12 and runs for 9 days. This will involve crunching only Prime Sierpinski Problem (LLR) work units. We'll have detailed instructions on what to do once we get close to that event.

The Prime Sierpinski Problem (LLR) work units we'll be crunching during the challenge are reputed to be extremely stressful on computer systems. See details here:

http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=1330&nowrap=true#15486

Here are details on the "stress test" mentioned above:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime95

Wouldn't crunching Prime Sierpinski Problem (LLR) WU's now be a stress test to assess how well a system will perform during the challenge?

All of this brings up the concept of a back up project for systems that can't hack these work units. Genetic Life has been recommended for this back up project, mainly because it is run by kanigit loonie Grawlfang who took resources away from his own project to help in our Operation Project Sztaki Quest. Even if you don't need a back up, please throw a little coal on Genetic Life this month...

What I'm seeing is that the Prime95 software has a stress-test mode, which is indeed widely used to test the stability of overclocks. I skimmed over what you linked, and didn't see anything to indicate that running a regular PrimeGrid BOINC task would be any more stressful on hardware than running any other BOINC project WFO, on all cores.

Yes, the one guy was whining about how noisy his fans are in his air-cooled system, and I'm tempted to tell him to try swapping them all out for Silenx fans.

For that matter, I now believe that you haven't heard "loud" until you hear a server like my HP/Compaq box, with the fans switched up to full speed. It sounds like three or four dustbusters are somehow running inside the case.

Anyway, this box is running two different PG tasks right now (albeit not the one in question), and it's not even breaking a figurative sweat. And it's my most cooling-challenged shrubber.

LOL. No - it looks like a similar glitch to the last POTM, though I didn't have any problems attaching new shrubbers, or getting tasks for shubbers that I've already shrubbed PrimeGrid on. And at least some types of shrubs can be processed all the way through (some smaller ones are already done.)

Looks like the initial projections were wildly pessimistic. On this shrubber (my Opty), one shrub was projected to take far in excess of 400 hours, and it appears that it will be closer to 105 hours to actually finish it.

I try to shrub for Tatas@home as well, but a small sub-process called BabyBoy.exe usually causes an access denied error.

I guess it depends on the size of the work units! #evil

[edit] It's now looking more like a little more than 1%/hour, which would of course mean fewer than 100 hours to shrub the WU [/edit]

Ooops, forgot to mark our starting point:

Currently in 38th place with 4,164,281 points and 29,241 RAC. We crunched 54,285 yesterday...

But those 100 hour WU's you generally get about 1K points for them.

These PSP work units are driving me nuts. I've got them running on a Q6700. They started off estimating 22 hours or so. That passed and the remaining time was 16 hours or so. That was around 10 am Eastern yesterday when I left on a trip. Their still running!

Do not forget that the PrimeGrid Challenge is going to be starting soon. Prepare you shrubbers for the long haul.

The Challenge starts in just a few hours, at 1:45 a.m. EST early tomorrow! Remember to log in to your Prime Grid account and set your Prime Grid preferences to crunch only Prime Sierpinski Problem (LLR) work units. Not sure if this is the ideal plan, let me know:

1. I've set all projects to "accept no new work".
2. I'll set the alarm for 1:45 a.m.
3. Send off all completed WU's.
4. Unfinished WU's with deadlines prior to 6/21 will be aborted.
5. All unfinished WU's with suitable deadlines will be suspended at that point.
6. Switch Prime Grid to "Accept new work" and hit update.
7. Crunch like a $#@!*%$*()...........
