Well, when you installed the nvidia drivers did you use the option to install the 32 bit compatibility modules?
Do you have all older versions of boinc removed?
The shared library doesn't always work right either if you install boinc yourself rather than from ubuntu's repository (this is because no one configures it when doing a manual install, so it doesn't know it's wrong), it has to be in the working directory.
Code:
ps aux | grep boinc

This should show you the working directory, if your libcudart.so library isn't in that directory, copy it over to it, restart everything and then try it.

If you've tried all this already, have a PGGB or two until one of us comes up with a solution.

No, I downloaded and fought to install it. it never asked me the normal questions.
So, I should uninstall it and look in the add remove programs to find boinc there? Then it will install correctly?

I will try that tomorrow. It would be nice to get it to run on the dedicated machine. currently I am putting on my main box for testing. I also have a couple of older 64 bit boxes that may benefit from the loss of XP......

I would first make sure you only have the one version installed, then I'd check that last part about the working directory. Then restart it and see if it sees your card. Hopefully that will do the trick.

The problem with installing on your own is that they frequently expect you to know certain things without telling you. It's more a problem with the maintainers than the software.

If you do get it to work, then you know what the problem is, I would then uninstall it and download the new 6.6 boinc. It supposedly sees to it that you don't lose a core when you have a gpu wu shrubbing.

It did not work. the manager it Dl's is 6.2.18 The one given at GpuGrid is 6.4.5

In searching I will have to install it and a bunch of Cuda tools. The instructions seem to be written for people who know what they are doing, that is not me....

They say to do such & such as if it is no big deal ( to them it isn't ) but to me it is Greek.
apparently many things need to be done from within a particular folder, "navigate to ...." and this is something I just can't seem to figure out. Additionally when they say "shut down X server" this caused me some real problems as now the GUI is gone and the commands don't seem to work for me, probably because they are prefaced by well known commands that they don't mention because they are "so obvious".

I am gonna' have to buy Ubuntu for Morons. Last time I bought a book like that was Windows 3.1 for dummies, Then about 6 months later Win 95 came out and I could safely forget all that Junk.

Oh well, I am not going to give up on this, I just need the foundation & language to talk with the people who know what is up #ni-1

I bought a book recently called Ubuntu for Non-Geeks that seems pretty good so far, but I haven't delved too deeply into it yet.

I'm doing a bit of experimenting myself on one of my Vista boxes. Ubuntu 9.04 crunches the PPS Prime Grid project WU's as much as twice as fast (CPU time anyway) as Vista 64. That's a direct comparison of the 64 bit OS's. A couple of Aqua WU's I tried went in 2-2 1/2 hours, but I need to check some things before I get too excited about that. They are 1 MB WU's and I need to check to see how that compares to the same WU on another box. It seems like the 25 hour initial estimate boinc manager gives is too high.

That is a Big Negative, Sir. Boinc sees no Cuda Devices. I am running 180.44 drivers and the Boinc version from GpuGrid. 6.4.somethin'

I looked all over and found at least 8 or 10 different fixes, none worked for me...... Confused

I really would like to make the switch and give Microsoft the boot.........

The problem is with out a profit incentive upgrades & drivers come out too slow or not at all.
The Linux community is a good thing but not really nimble enough to challenge Big Business.
Microsoft just sees what people like in other OS's and incorporate them into their next product.

I'm not really sure that the "Meek shall inherent the Earth". I wouldn't bet on it Crying or Very sad

I'm with you there. Just installed Ubuntu 9.04 on an XP64 box and everything went great until I installed the 180 NVIDIA driver. Now Ubuntu only boots to a command line. Pappa is right, this just isn't quite ready for prime-time.

If the manager shows a version different from the one you downloaded at GPU grid then you have at least TWO versions of boinc installed. Run it back out of work and then start with synaptic and see if you have a standard boinc package installed. Then check for an init script to see if there's some other copy installed. You need to get it to just the one copy that you want to run. At least now you know what issue you're chasing.

I uninstalled Boinc and re-installed the one included with Ubuntu. There is only one installed. (pretty sure)
I don't think I ever got the one I downloaded from GpuGrid to install, for the same reason I couldn't get the Nvidia drivers to install. Ie: I don't know how to install as a superuser.

I checked at Ubuntu's home page and 6.2.18 is the one that they have incorporated into 9.04. I am not sure but I don't believe that is Cuda enabled. If I had the ability I am sure I could install 6.4.5 which is recommended by GpuGrid, but it will take a while for me to learn how to do the Sudo install thingie..... Many of the help sites are for 8.04 or 8.10 and I am sure that it is just different enough with 9.04 that the instructions I have been getting are the reason that it is not working.

ok, if you want to be root in Ubuntu do:

Code:
sudo passwd root

you'll be prompted for your password to continue
Then you'll be prompted for a new password for root

Then you use
Code:
su

and enter your new root password.

You'll now be a superuser on your system

uninstall the standard one for ubuntu

Download the new one from Berkeley and install it.

after you install it type "exit"
this will exit the superuser and you will be back to your normal account.

Code:
sudo passwd -l root

This will lock the root account back up.

Thanks, I was doing all that but not using su prefix with the password.
I will not mess with it today, I gotta be in Delaware on Tuesday so I will just leave it alone.

Btw: after my last Ubuntu session my comp BsoD'ed and XP needed to be re-activated, WTF. Ubuntu is installed on a separate physical drive so it should not have affected the WPA.

I don't know, these BsoD's and other things may have nothing to do with Ubuntu, But they did not start until after I installed it.

I haven't used wubi if that's what you did, and if it's on a physically different drive it should have no interaction really. Windows is not know to be overly stable, hopefully it's just a coincidence. Have a good trip!

Ok, another question......

I installed Wubi on my Amd 64 fx 2800+ box. It installed just fine and rebooted, when the desktop came up after about 1-2 min it froze. Hard drive light solid on and no lights on keyboard. I hard crashed it and rebooted and same thing. So I hit esc on the next reboot and ran the recovery mode and fix broken files and another thing I can't remember. Rebooted and same thing, this time after about 4 min.

I restarted again and ran Memtest ( included in esc menu) and on test #6 it says I have 1,254,144 errors. This just can't be right. I left both sticks in, they are 2Gig of Ocz Platinum DDR400.

This comp has been running win xp for ~7 years, it is a consistent ~400 credit a day shrubber. It has errors on occasion but it is on 24/7 and has been for 5+ years (except power failures or moving etc).

This is the computer that I tried to put ubuntu on a couple of years ago and I could never get a display, just a orange screen, so I gave up and left it Win xp. That was my first attempt at Linux and I have not done it again until now.

Any suggestions? It is not reasonable that that much memory could be bad and still boot into windows.....

unplug it and take the memory out and reseat it. Fire it up and run the memtest again. If it fails, pull one stick and then run it. Then try it again with the other stick. Memory can go bad after all.

Does it crash running both windows and linux?

No, it does not crash in xp.
I just finished a little maintenance, I booted into windows and defraged and cleaned up the drives. Then I went thru the Bios to make sure there were no issues there. I also used the recovery console and pretty much did every option there.

I finally rebooted unto Ubuntu, and chose Options at the lower left of the sign in screen. I chose xserver session and it locked up immediately. It has a Nvidia 6800 Gt agp card. I am thinking I should do a clean install of Ubuntu, without Wubi.

Do you know if Ubuntu 9.04 can handle hardware that old?
I'm gonna' check on line.....

I found this on the net

Quote:
This is the problem:
Ubuntu installs Flawlessly, however when i go to login, i goes to load the desktop and then once something displays the screen like artifacts and has a complete lockup where i have to restart the machine.

Looks like the fix is this

Quote:
hah. i got it working! yay. and actually it was pretty easy . i just had the package manager download / install the nvidia driver. and then i edited the xorg.conf changed the identifyer, took out defualt and replaced it with 7800GT and such, started up X and crossed my fingers and it worked!.

Sounds easy except I haven't got the faintest idea what he did Confused
how do you get the package manager download something if you can't log in?

I'm gonna' by a book #ni-1
