|
|
OK I have two Q6600's
one running XP pro 32bit with a single GTX260, that gets a GPUGrid WU Shrubbed in about 6.5 hours....
http://www.gpugrid.net/results.php?hostid=162
another with Vista 32bit with two GTX260's that gets each GPUgrid WU shrubbed in 8.5 hours....
http://www.gpugrid.net/results.php?hostid=32557
the thing is that the Vista machine used to have XP pro and 1 GTX260 and took 6.5 hours...
both have 2 gig RAM and run Boinc v6.6.20 so my question is
is it Vista or two cards on one mobo that causing the extra time?

Vista is a resource HOG. It might level out a little more if you had 4 GB to make up for part of vista, but for 32-bit OSs. XP beats Vista hands down.
Why don't you put a 64 bit linux on there to use even more of the available power? _________________ Some days are worse than others. |

My Vista box seems to run faster than the XP box (both are 64 bit versions) but the Vista is running one 260 and has 8GB RAM and the XP box has 4 GB RAM and is running a 260, an 8800 GT and a 9600 GSO. I think it's the extra cards that slows it down, but I'm not certain about that. _________________

hmm.... didn't think of going 64bit

I might Remove one of the 260's into another XP machine, if both boxes improve then its the SLi, otherwise Vista gets it! _________________ Oh, it's blessed are the meek!, Well I'm glad they'll get something as they have a hell of a time!

Are you running in SLI mode, or just with multiple cards in the same box? From what I've read, GPUGrid doesn't recognize additional GPU's in SLI mode. _________________

Looks like it might be time to double up the 260's in my XP box then. Stupid Vista _________________

I have a 904 Deneb Quad core with one 9800GTX+
and a 9850 Quad core with 2 9800GTX+
Both are on XP Pro SP3 32bit.
The one with 2 cards runs a bit faster, But that is probably because that only does Boinc and Gimps. The 940 is my main box and gets used whenever I am home.
I don't think that there is any difference between 1,2 or 3 cards in a box, At least there wasn't for me with XP...... _________________ a.k.a. Licentious of Borg.........Resistance Really is Futile.......

it'd be good for a comaprison _________________ Oh, it's blessed are the meek!, Well I'm glad they'll get something as they have a hell of a time!

One other difference on my 260's is that the one in the Vista box has 192 cores and the one in the XP box has 216 cores. I doubt that would make a 2 hour difference in run times though. I'm using 182.5 drivers on both. _________________

Yeah. The kicker is that it came with downgrade rights to XP - which means it actually comes with XP installed - but I wanted a 64 bit OS. That'll teach me. _________________

XP Pro 64 is fine, but it came with XP Pro 32 installed or I could install Vista Ult 64 that came with it. In retrospect, it wasn't the best decision. _________________

OK. I've moved both 260's into an XP box along with a 9600. The PSU wouldn't handle 2 260's and an 8800 GT. Might be time for a new PSU and just go with a third 260. At any rate, production of the 260 I moved seems better. The work unit types have been mixed, but I think it was a good move and hopefully, the increase in production from moving the 260 will make up for the loss of credit from the 8800. _________________
