Ten hours, two packs of smokes, a few PGGBs and a laser light show with dancing kittens later, Gentoo is finally up and running on my AMD system. I used the gen-kernel, with gentoo-sources, so it's not a completely slimmed-down system (but it does wear black, so it looks slimmer!).
When it was running Ubuntu, it would "estimate" about an hour and 51 minutes to shrub an SHA-1. So far, after running over-night on Gentoo, it estimates about 57 minutes. As long as it stays there, I'll be a happy camper. With that kind of improvement, I may replace the other Ubuntu system with Gentoo too, because I apparently enjoy self-inflicted pain!
Thanks for the advice about Gentoo! Any advice for better shrubbing is always welcome!
