SETI has given me a task that will take 271 hours to process.
Isn't that a bit unusual?
It's way beyond what they usually send me.
I've had to stop all other shrubbing until I'm sure of completion ( I was given 29 days).
It also begs a few questions:
how do they calculate how long it will take? ( I have an Athlon 2000 (1667mhz) ) do they know that? ( I don't mind their knowing, I'm just curious).
If not, is it a generalization of modern computer speeds?
Ok, two questions.

271 hours? ha! That's a short one... Rolling Eyes

I just encountered a WU that needs 450 hours to crunch (http://www.kwsnforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=12946)

I bet it's an astro pulse work unit, isn't it? Laughing

I had one come benchmarked at 510 hours. It finished in about 85 hours

I've noticed on some projects that when you initially download WU's the estimates are very high, but improve as you do more work units. This has happened with projects like SHA-1 where the WU's are consistent in size. The SETI AP WU's are all over the place. I got one yesterday that projected 49 hours and thought that was bad, but the same machine is crunching a CPDN WU that is a measly 400 hours or so.

I'd like to know how they estimate that, too.

It is most likely a Astropulse WU, they tend to be a bit longer than the regular SETI WUs.

So far it has had 112:04 hours of time from an AMD2000 (1667Mhz).
Time left is 286:32, which is 27.2% ???
Doesn't compute does it?
So what gives?

You can and probably should dl an Optimized client.

http://lunatics.kwsn.net/

You will need to register to Dl and you need to find the correct client and follow the directions. use Cpuz to determine the abilities of your chip

http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

I can't get one as I forgot my Password and Simon has not emailed me a new one yet.... #ni-1

Is it possible to change to the optimized client while crunching with the normal client? I mean, close the boinc manager, putting the optimized client in place and starting the boinc manager again without damaging the work done so far? I still have an AP WU half way through with 200+ hours of crunching that I wouldn't like to lose...

Simon, as in Chicken of Angor?? He has been MIA since the rollout of MultiBeam SETI...going on 2 years now...

You can set up a simple proportion. I have an AP WU that originally was benchmarked at 212 estimated hours to completion. To date, I have 95 hours CPU time on this WU, which is about 85% complete. You set up the following equation: 95:85::X:100. It reads, "95 is to 85 percent as X is to 100 percent. Multiply the 95 by 100 and divide the result by 85 which yields 111, which is the total number of hours to complete the WU. That means I have about 111 hours minus 95 hours or 16 hours left to complete the WU. I am chipping away at it, at about 1.5 hours per day now, so I can focus on SHA-1 work units for the PotM. I should complete the SETI AP WU by the due date of March 15th. I may have to add an hour or two at the end, but it will come out pretty close. Hope this helps.

What I hate is when the time to complete keeps sliding further and further out. I had to give up on one that I had wasted 72 hours on, because it was already past deadline, and it was showing an ever-increasing time to complete that had already exceeded 23 hours.

What gives is you totally cannot count on the "to completion" times on AP WUs. More than once I have had them expand, seemingly with no end, until I gave up and aborted the WU.

Yet another reason I don't run SETI much.

I've had that happen a few times, too. Very irritating

You know you guys can uncheck the box for getting AP WUs at the SETI@Home prefences in your account right? Rolling Eyes

Yep. I had it unchecked for quite awhile and for some reason checked it again the other day and wound up with an AP WU that went on for days. Rolling Eyes

It keeps sending them to me anyway... I just abort them #ni-1

Did you uncheck the other box that asks if you are willing to run other projects if there's no work available in your preferred projects?

What gives is that these WUs are quite suited for KWSN, because they are utterly silly.

What I've noticed, more than once, is there is an initial time to completion. I'll go back days later, the CPU time will be some MULTIPLE of the original time to completion (say three times), the new time to completion will be HIGHER than the original time to complete, and the progress will be something like 42%.

I recently gave up on 72 hours processing, because it was past deadline, and the supposed time to completion was still 20+ hours

If I ever crunch SETI again (which I likely won't, unless I get a CUDA-capable GPU), I will probably take Idan's advice and set it so I don't get any Astropulse WUs
