I have noticed that upstate NY and other areas that get (and keep) more snow than here seem to know how to take care of the roads. _________________ Fetch me the Holy Hand Grenade!

Down here in the colonies, we dream of snow.....
Cool, and white, and cool.... and cool..... so coooool, and so whiiiite.
Here today it was a balmy 42 degrees......
BLOODY CELSIUS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's over 107 F.
It all started back on Jan 26, a nice sunny day, top temp of 37.2c or just 99F. Typical summers day for us in this part of Australia.
27th? Warmed up a bit, 40.0c or 104f
28th, 44.2c or almost 113f, geez it's a bit hot mate
29th, 44.4c, 113f, hot again today
30th, 45.2c or 113.4f. A bit warmer today.....
31st, 45.1c. Down 0.1c on yesterday. I didn't notice......
Feb 1. A new month. Down to 42.3c AND IT FELT COOLER!!
Feb 2 & 3. A genuine cool change. Down to 37c/99f. Bliss.....
Feb 4. 39.8c/103.6f. Warming up again
Feb 5. 42.5c/108.5f. A bit hot again.....
Feb 6. Only 41 today. This is easy.
Feb 7. Prediction is 45~47c. 47c is 116.6f. With VERY strong winds and a dust storm predicted. I think this will be a foretaste of Hell
Feb 8. Predicted top of 28c/82f. Anyone got a furry hat, coat, and gloves I can borrow??
Snow? Don't talk to me about bloody snow!
Anyway,
(The shrubber hasn't died in the heat [yet] )

Sir Loin (Well done) |
Sir Loin, I really feel for you guys down there. The situation is absolutely horrific! The floods up north are bad enough, but the fires are literally wiping (or should I say burning) towns off the map.
I just heard that a channel 9 newsreader and his wife are among the poor people who have lost their lives. It's very sad and totally devastating. My thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones, and everything else in the fires.
Devastating floods up north, the bushfires down south, desert in the middle. We really do go from one end of the scale to the other here.
I'm hoping that the rain keeps coming south, because we could do with some here in Hervey Bay...maybe not as much as they've up north though.
All you lot freezing your bums off in the northern hemisphere could help out a bit by loading up the snow into eskies and sending it down to Victoria.

I thought about it, but it was too late. I've got this funny green stuff showing in my yard. It's been so long, I forgot what we used to call it. _________________

Would that be Mildew? Oh, it's green so maybe it's algae!
John, thanks for the snowball but you should have a lot further south and hit Sir Loin in Victoria.
Sir Loin - Just watched the extended report on ch. 10 news, and even our 'glorious leader' (as my son calls him ) was too choked up to speak. Those poor people.

Thanks Michelle,
We and most we know are safe. Around here the ground is bare from the drought, there is hardly a blade of grass in this area to burn.
My brother in law is in Healesville, has had a fire nearby for 3 days but is confident and very well setup to fight.
We have a lot of friends and rellies in Myrtleford, which has fires nearby. They are all used to fires around there.
We are expecting the power to go out at any time. They need to do some "load sharing" because so many of our major power lines have been burnt down.
Just on the telly, death toll 130 so far.
Hope you are all well up there. |

Ok. They started the fires, they can put them out. Hand them a shovel and drop them off at the edge of the fires and tell them to get to work. when they are done, the people that lost family members then the people that lost property get to have their way with them. if the bastards manage to survive that, then they have to go to jail. _________________ Fetch me the Holy Hand Grenade!

Sir Loin, I'm glad you're all okay in your area, but it looks like Healesville is now in a nasty position. Healesville on alert... I hope your brother-in-law and his family get through it okay.
According to news.com.au this morning there's over 170 dead now. There will be more unfortunately, and a lot of people in hospital are in critical condition so some of those may not survive either.
Also, police are closing in on someone that they think is responsible for a couple of the fires. I hope they catch all those responsible because they don't deserve to be out there gloating over their handiwork after causing so much pain and suffering.
I'm hoping some of the rain that nearly drowned north Queensland comes to visit Hervey Bay, and then keeps going south to Victoria but I don't think it's going to oblige. It is moving south according to the radar, and we're supposed to be getting some rain over the next couple of days but according to the channel 10 weather report last night, the meteorologists have it moving it back up north. That's the last thing they need up there at the moment.
I don't know if anyone can remember a pic I posted showing the huge flood level gauge at the river outside Charters Towers, but it was really hard to believe that the river could come up anywhere near that high. Anyway, a woman we met through having a stall at the markets sent an email yesterday with a scan from the paper showing how high the river was recently with the floods. It rose to nearly the top of the flood gauge pole! Unbelievable! I'll reduce the size of the pic and post it when I get a chance.
The floods have caused a lot of damage, but there's a world of difference between mopping up afterwards and the total devastation of a large proportion of Victoria.
This is ridiculous! I just clicked on this link at news.com.au - Wet weather a Catch-22 for battling Victoria bushfires - and the article is about the bushfires in New South Wales, not Victoria. Anyway, the two blokes that have been caught for arson started a couple of the New South Wales fires not Victoria which is where it is really bad. I hope they round them all up and make them stand up in front of all their victims! We'll see how brave they are then, won't we. _________________ My brain hurts.

Imagine having that coming towards you! People being interviewed yesterday said that the fires were traveling at 120 km/hr. There's no way you could outrun a fire going at that speed.
I saw a man and his wife interviewed on the news last night who said that if they had tried to get off their property earlier they would have died as the fire came along the road. If they'd tried to stay at their house they would have died as their house virtually exploded. They did try to leave in the car but couldn't because there was fire all around them, so the only choice they had was to park in a narrow strip that had already been burnt.
I can't even begin to imagine how terrifying that would be.
Apparently they're expecting strong winds later today, so that is going to make everything flare up and spread even more.
I feel so frustrated that I'm just sitting here while so many families are suffering, and there's nothing I can do to help other than scratch up a few household items and clothes to donate to the Salvos or Red Cross.
From what I can gather there are firies on the way over from N.Z., fire experts getting ready to leave the U.S., offers of help from Gordon Brown, but I have heard nothing about firies being sent down from here in Queensland. I know a lot of emergency service workers would be needed to help out up north to mop up after the flooding but you don't really need firies for water inundation. I don't know, maybe firies have been sent down from here and I just haven't seen anything about it. I hope so.
Humans have so much to contend with when they are affected by natural disasters, and it makes me sick in the guts when so many people, whether it's here or anywhere else in the world, have to suffer so much because of the actions of...I can't even think of a word to describe the people who deliberately set out to do these things to other human beings.
The only good thing to come out of this and other 'unnatural' disasters is that it unites people and brings them together to try and help in whatever way that they can. _________________ My brain hurts.

Hi Michelle,
Brother in law is fine. He sat up all last night and watched the fire on the next hill. The fire there is under control now, the fire fighters have fought it to a standstill.
Heard one man interviewed on the radio last night. The wind was so strong in front of the fire that it blew in all his north facing windows. Burning debris started coming in and starting fires inside. That was before the fire front proper got there! He exited out the back into a steel shed and survived. |

It's amazing that the fire can move so fast and destroy so quickly and absolutely.
There is only way to get everyone involved. All the Aussies need to start drinking much beer and ummm, wet everything down . It won't burn then. _________________ Fetch me the Holy Hand Grenade!

I've not sure that is a good plan- the Aussie beer is not to be confused with the "light weight" stuff we drink he in the states.
PS- Don't compare "import" beer with what the "exporters" drink- the US gov makes them "throttle it back" for import into the US.
PPS- Michelle, if you could send me a case of Castlemaine XXX
I would be forever in your debt! _________________

Things seem to be settling down a bit in Victoria...finally.
I just saw headlines about twisters but haven't had a chance to read articles yet to see where or when. Isn't this the wrong time of the year for twisters over there?
I hope there were no looneys in the firing line. _________________ My brain hurts.
