WELCOME to the Orbiting Fortress! What projects are you using the BOINC software on? I started with SETI@Home, but since joining here at KWSN (Knights Who Say Ni!), I have spread out to over a dozen projects!
There's a couple things involved with your Cell Phone question. There's companies that MAKE Cell Phones (that is, the hardware part, the actual PHONE) and companies that provide the Cellular SERVICE (like your mention of Cingular and AT&T). [BTW, about 2004 these two became one and the same]
The hole you asked about is a Lanyard hole, for attaching a Lanyard Wrist Strap (kinda like a keychain). While several models may not have one, there's a good number of phones that DO have one.
You need to drop by some Cell Phone shop, like the ones found in the mall kiosks somewhere, and see what phone appeals to you. THAT phone (the HARDWARE) has to get service from SOMEBODY, so the next step is ask AT&T/Cingular if your current service plan could use the newly-picked phone (or could they modify your service plan to use it). BEFORE YOU BUY IT, get the person selling the phone to say it'll be OK with Cingular/AT&T, otherwise make sure you can get your money back!
I personally like the LG phones, and like Motorola as my backup choice. I like Verizon as my 'Provider', giving me the Service to use it.
While I may not have answered your question outright, I hope to have helped you somewhat. _________________

13 Oct 1983
Before that it was smoke and blankets!
Add: On Oct, 13th 1983 the first wireless phone call was executed by Ameritec Mobile in Soldier Field. The first mobile handset was the world famous "brick phone" (a.k.a. Motorola DynaTAC 8000X). That time this "tiny and ergonomic" device cost 3,995 USD and weighted around 0.8kg. This is incredible compared the the ones today with just 1/10 of the weight. _________________

Wireless phones were around ages before then (I know coz I used 'em) - that was just the first portable handset phone
Take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_mobile_phones for a potted history...

I just ain't gonna own up to my first "Lugable" "Mobile" phone (But it was made by Motorola tm )
Could not be "Mugged" for it either , too heavy to walk with - let alone run away with the dern thing ! (Mind you it had well over < 4 Watts to reach a - errm - mast somewhere ) .

PS: It had a lead acid battery that would "almost" start my Landy in winter - yes I tried ! _________________ Oh Bugger Forgot again - or is it Oh Father Reboot again ?

"In December 1971, AT&T submitted a proposal for cellular service to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). After years of hearings, the FCC approved the proposal in 1982 for Advanced Mobile Phone Service (AMPS) and allocated frequencies in the 824-894 MHz band."
Since the FCC OKed the AMPS in 1982, what we call "Cell Phones" could not be before then. Wireless, yes. Cordless, yes. NOT "Celllar"...
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!
(And my frrst was the Bag Phone) _________________

Hey! Don't blame me. You took the ball and ran with it.
The bag phone is quite stylish, plenty of room for lipstick and perfume.
The outlaws had one similar to this many years ago -
My first one was like this -

Bay any pay as you go cell phone, any make, provider does not matter. Drill big hole through the middle and thread string. Should work a treat and your phone bill will be zero.
I had a Nokia 510 as well but it got run over when I lost my temper with it _________________ Crabbypatty
