I've been to a recording of QI (June 2007, although they were recording the Christmas edition at the time!).

The standard aired show is 30 minutes, but the real run-time for the show is nearly two hours with no breaks (basically they just cue the theme tune and do everything in one take Shocked ).
A lot of the stuff was very, very funny, but unbroadcastable. The BBC have twigged that there is a lot more material there and now do a "QI XL" version later at night with 45 minutes worth...
