Great, I could use a bit of help there - I've just about given up trying to gain places and am gamely trying to fight a kNi!ghtly rearguard action, with only limited success.

Any help would be much appreciated.

BTW, Yoyo is a reasonable payer; not up there with 3x or MW, probably about Einstein level. There's a vaguely useful credit comparison at BOINCstats here, but bear in mind it's averaged across all shrubbers on each project, so is only very approximate.

Which two projects do you think would help with that the most?

Slowly but surely I am moving to yoyo. Just have to finish up some 3x+1, and all quads should be locked and loaded by the weekend...

Great, your contribution, plus Sir SquareBob SpongePants (the Incontinent), could well gain us three+ places in the next month or so.

Sir Yankton - just keep up the good work in Superlink, you're doing a superb job there.

The other projects where we're in a position to gain or under serious threat are Dockin (of the Bay), NQueens and POEM if anyone else would like to make a contibution. We're also beginning to ramp up in SHA-1 where there could well be some major gains with a bit of effort.

Good for you! I've been plummeting like a rock in world standings. It's been a while since I've even had the heart to look.

The good news is I have one more box online (albeit very modestly powered - its main role in life is to be an Untangle server), and another one sitting here beside me as I speak, which needs OS install, etc. It will be the new home for my 2K3 OS, and it has 2X2.4 gHz Xeon (heh, heh, heh). Certainly nothing like the C2D and C4D hardware that many folks on the team are running, and at least I might not plummet quite so quickly in the standings once I get it online.

And the price was right. Would you believe $75 plus tax (ebay auction local pickup), including two 36.4G drives and 1GB memory? That's a little light for what I want to do with it, so I scored 4 x 512MB sticks on ebay for about $28 with shipping. I can leave two of the existing ones in, which will give me 2.5GB RAM.

I'm into the Untangle server box for about what that additional RAM costs, though that's only if you count the cost of the extra NIC that I got as part of a lot some time ago, though that includes an HDD I got free from an old Dell Windoze ME (shudder!) box that someone gave me. And, since I can't find my good, nVidia vid card, I might have to invest another $5-10 to get a PCI vid card with at least 8MB video memory.

You know, looking at my signature in the message preview, my combined rank is just short of 98.5%, which really isn't anything to be ashamed of. I also see that I'm past 500K total credits, which I hadn't really noticed before.

There seem to be a few folks around who should remember me. I've kept shrubbing, just not kept up with the forums.

I'm definitely up for reallocating what modest shrubbing resources I have, for the good of the team. I am very open to suggestions.

If you can, hook up with Milkyway. Then get the optimized app. Have another project to run as a back up when you can't get any MW work. The MW optimized app is decent for credit (each WU can me 5 to 15 minutes with it). They can't keep up with the demand yet.

I'll see what I can do. As it turns out, the "new" Xeon box has two dual core processors (imagine my surprise when I ran the benchmark). In the absence of other advice, I went ahead and put yo-yo on it, and it seems to be shrubbing away quite contentedly.

Done, sir, on my "new" P4 Xeon box. I left yo-yo on it as a backup. I guess I could attach Leiden or something as a backup-backup.

I don't think that it's shrubbing anywhere near as fast as your machines are, though it seems to be doing fairly well. It also rapidly got to the point where milkyway was whining about my exceeding the 8 wu's/cpu limit, though I think I had already accumulated more than that somehow.

Anyway, I set it to "no new tasks", to shut up the whining, and also in anticipation of installing the optimized app.

Speaking of which, where do I get such?

Cool. Thanks. The P4 Xeon is already doing pretty well. I can't wait to see what it does with the optimized app.

Oh, yeah I forgot. I went ahead and put Milkyway on my Opty 170 box, too. Depending on how the optimized app works (e.g. if it takes advantage of L2 cache like the chicken SETI app), that should flat out fly Twisted Evil

If yo are so lucky to get any work. They are having a bit of trouble keeping up with demand at the moment. When you get it, it is great.

It's kind of a drag - I had tasks I just downloaded today, but they weren't running any faster after I "installed" the optimized app. Then I realized I had forgotten to restart BOINC. I did that the easy way by restarting the computer, but then all the Milkyway wu's were gone somehow Crying or Very sad

Now I can't download any more tasks. Believe it or not, that's the first time that's happened in the last two days since I first attached to the project.

At least I got another 40 credits or so from Milkyway since the middle of the day.

I could be mistaken, but it may have caused a problem if you installed the optimized app while boinc was still running. you might need to detach from MW, reattach, shut boinc down and then install the optimzed app. might be a good idea too if it had no WUs in progress when you install it also.

You got that right! The version mismatch caused it to ditch the many wu's I had (rats!!). Now there are no more forthcoming.

I don't think I need to go that far. At least I have the "no WUs in progress" part down, though I had that the first time (I had set it to "No New Tasks" until they were all gone).

All I did was to paste the new app into the file and then restart the service. #ni-1

They've sorted things out, partly by making the WUs bigger. The thing is, if you're running the optimzed app MW won't send you any. I did a detach/attach process on my Xeon box before I found the message below. I don't know if deleting the application.xml file disables the optimized app, though I suspect it may:

I detached and reattached. It sent me 1 WU about 5 hrs in length.

Of course there are still Poem apps ahead of it.... Rolling Eyes

I deleted the app_info.xml file on my opty 170 box, suspended the apps that were running, and was then able to download some more WUs. Since they were due before the ones I already had, they proceeded to run. That box is shrubbing more quickly (per core) than the Xeon box, though I think it's strictly in porportion to the relative power of the CPUs themselves.

So far, so good. We'll see how it goes.
