The last batch of work was actually a slightly new set of calculations and done by a new member of the CERN group which contributes to LHC@home. We asked him for a description of his work and here it is.



One of the key parameters for a circular accelerator is the so-called dynamic aperture. It represents the region in phase space where stable motion occurs so that a charged particle moving in this region will remain confined in it for a very large number of turns.


Whenever interactions between charged particles are neglected, the size of such a domain is determined by magnetic field imperfections. These imperfections are unavoidable for superconducting magnets, which are the vast majority of the CERN Large Hadron Collider elements. Nevertheless, these disturbances should be kept under control to ensure the required machine performance.


In the design phase, intense tracking campaigns were performed to assess the acceptable level of magnetic imperfection and hence specify the magnetic field quality. At that time, the field quality of the various magnet classes was defined in terms of statistical distributions of the expected magnetic errors. With the completion of the magnet allocation phase, the analysis of the 'as-built' machine could start.


Thanks to the huge amount of information gathered with the magnetic measurements performed before installing the magnets in the tunnel, it is possible to define an accurate model of the machine and hence to infer its expected performance, at least in terms of dynamic aperture. Therefore, new intense efforts are being devoted to massive numerical simulations aimed at computing the dynamic aperture of the actual machine rather than a statistical realization of it.
