In almost one year (April 10th is my anny), I have accomplished the following:
All Projects:
1/4 of a million total shrubs
top 275 in team (I was waiting for top 250 but couldnt wait any longer)
top 33000 world wide (out of 1.3 million)
97.48% world wide
Cels@Home
#1 in team (though there are only six members)
Einstein
100K shrubs
top 100 in team
almost top 10000 world wide
94.6% world wide
Rosetta
almost 140K total shrubs
top 30 in team
top 3800 world wide
98% world wide
TSP & Predictor
...nothing really to report here _________________

Well done.
I took about the same (358 days) for my 1st ¼ million, and look at me now - the last ¼ million took just 12 days!!**
and many more years of happy shrubbing.
** BTW - that wasn't meant to belittle your efforts at all, just showing what can be done with if you've a mind (and aren't afraid to open your wallet - there's ~8 grand (Sterling)!!! of shrubbers behind that number).

I have a mind and only about so many shrubs turned in. Not knowing the exact amount of work turned in. Congrats on being #1 in Cels; just because it is small does not mean it is easy to get to the #1 spot in any project.

Considering you are at 94 GHz total...and im at 9.6 (quad @ 2.4) and 2.8 (p4) I would hope you accomplished that in 12 days . If I ever get a spare ~$16,000 laying around I will match your 8K pound. I will probably purchase a new quad once Intel gets their new chip to the masses and the Q6600 drops in price a bit, but that is a ways yet. I am glad we have people like you on the team willing to purchase so much hardware/power. _________________

(Don't worry about the size of the project - apparently size doesn't matter )
How much further do you want the Q6600 to fall???
I can get pretty decent complete Q6600 systems (Dell) for around £500 (say $1000 ) so your $16000 would get you over 150 GHz! Go home-brew and it should be even cheaper
I don't think GHz is a good measure though as my old 2.8GHz Nocona turns in a fraction of the output of the current CPUs.
I reached my first 250000 in just over a month (since early Feb) and should reach 500000 soon. I'm using a Q6600 system (RAC 1500), an E5420 based system (RAC 3400), four old scrap/spare parters (RAC <2000) and an occasional laptop (RAC around 100) [when it is not a laptop is a pretty paperweight ]
I'm contemplating replacing the old systems with another new quad (or two ) when I get my next bonus.

I've tried that before. I always start-up the new system and then look at the old system that I have fond memories of- and re-start it!

It is not so much that I expect it to fall drastically, but it is still the same price it was about this time last year. I would expect, perhaps incorrectly, that it would drop some once they release the new chips and with that drop would come a drop with motherboards/ram/etc... Honestly though I know me and if something newer is out then I want that new thing. Take for instance my video card:
When I build this Quad I purchased a junk 8400 video card to get me going. My thought was that once the 8800GT's came down in price (they had just come out when I built this machine and were very expensive and hard to get) I would get one. Ok then they came down in price and was available....however by that time the 8800GTS (g92)'s were out. So I said "ok, I will wait for them to come down in price and get one of those"...ok now they have (somewhat) and guess what....nVidia released their 98xx line....and guess what I want now? Point is I will probably end up with the 8800GTS (g92) for my current machine, but I didnt get the 8800GT (as planned) because something newer came along.
When Intel gets their new chips out to the masses I will probably want one and would not (at that time) consider getting an "old" Q6600...go figure _________________

I 100% agree here.
My old P4 2.8GHz gives me almost a 200 RAC...which is 0.0714 RAC/MHz
My Quad 2.4GHz gives me almost a 1800 RAC...which is 0.1875 RAC/MHz
or in otherwords 2.62 times more RAC per MHz.
I was just using GHz as he had it in his signature and I was too lazy to look up what he had in Boinc _________________

Incorrect, it is now $249 on newegg, so it has dropped at least $30 (since Nov), if not $50 (since last Mar). My bad, see kids, this is why you should research before you post! _________________

A year ago it would have been the B3 (SL9UM) - TDP 105W
Now it will be the G0 (SLACR) stepping - TDP 95W, so more potential for overclocking...
Same with the Xeon quad cores
At the end of last year I was expecting to go with the X3220 (SL9UP) - 105W, 65nm, 8Mb cache, but ended up with the E5420 (SLANV) - 80W, 45nm, 12Mb cache for less money ...
Of course in a few months time I will regret that when the Dunningtons and then the Nehalems hit retail...

Just over a month later and they are now $219.99 on Newegg <<link>>, gobble them up kids while they last _________________

It took me 7 years 1 month and 3 days to hit 1 million. I have since put in 369,000 in 3 month 3 days. I will be over 2 million by year end. It is a function of more power and more credits per unit.
I still think about buying a dual athlon board ~$150 or 2 for the 4 barton cores just sitting in the closet, but for the power consumption a new quad is a better use of electricity. ( not to mention the cost of pc 133 memory). ( we won't talk about all of the Slot A's sitting next to them)
And congrats on being #1 in a project, I know just how that feels. It would be nice to be #1 world wide on a project but you must consider that some Boincers have entire Multinational corporations that they can borg.
Just keep on shrubbing, ( I remember when hitting 1K credits a day was my goal ). _________________ a.k.a. Licentious of Borg.........Resistance Really is Futile.......

The worst part is that after finding the money for the hardware, you need to find the cash every month to support it (although it is cheaper than my ex-wife). For me that's about $90/month on my electric bill to run 63 GFlops. _________________

And therein lies my biggest worry.
I'm currently spending ~£100/month on power. Now I moved into my current abode 4½ years ago, and my price hasn't changed since then - I seem to have slipped through the price increase net (thankfully). I should be paying ~4x that at the moment, and £400/month is beyond my means.
If you notice a sudden halving (or more) of my output sometime in the future, it means that a bean-counter somewhere has tumbled my supplier's ineptitude and rectified the situation - I'm not sure I could even keep my 7 quads running if/when that happens.
Fingers crossed I can keep a low profile well into the future.

It's going to get ugly on this side of the pond also. The way business is looking, I can afford to run the computers OR the AC needed to cool them in the coming summer. I think I'm going to be down to 2 machines running once things warm up. _________________

Which is why you should all upgrade to E8400s or somesuch. 30 watts at 100% load, and almost twice as fast as my E6400. Or 9450s, the quad core equivalent. Or whatever the 6 cores will be when they ship. Newer = less power draw = less heat output. _________________

the problem with AMD procs are the they are mega power hungry compared to the intel's, Sir all you could probably get a coulple of the low end dell dual quad servers/workstations (eg E5420) and decom half of your AMD farm (3800 spec boxes) and end up saving £££ on your electricity bill....
