One of my crunchers is going to be retired from crunching. I have a good heart for people in trouble, so I have donated my P4 -2.8G machine (average about 200RAC) to a family in need. Once it finishes the work that is on it, I will be wiping it and reinstalling the OS clean, putting on the necessary software and upgrading these people from a P2 - 333Mhz beast with Win98SE on (and looks like loaded with SpyWare/MalWare). Sad

Divorced mom with 3 children. She is disabled from a bad back (several surgeries done so far and maybe more in the future). She has become a good friend, and I can not see this family using that old computer for their school work, etc.

I will not be installing BOINC back on it because I will not have general access to the machine to keep it maintained.

So, now to hope to get enough taxes back this year to buy me a new quad to replace it. Wink

Do you have a story like above? Tell us about it. It's nice to help out families like this. The reward to see them be able to use this new machine for their work, etc. is going to be well worth it. #ni-1

Yes Sir Pooh Bear , I do .

Quite a few machines that I owned (and many ,many more from upgrades that Da-Grizz did) , went to deserving homes .

Keep up the good work Sir .

My RAC is going to drop a while. I am trying to get the work done on the P4 Xeon so I can retire it. I am looking for a Quad, but not right away. The current machine has a good few months before it's done with the CPDN work it's doing. Once done, that box will be available to maybe sell?

So, as I drop in stats and you roll by me, wave and remember that I will come back with more power and more kick sometime in the longer future.

That's not being a push-over, Pooh. That's being very kind and generous. #ni-1

I've done a couple of machines over time to friends who were in or going back to school, otherwise my spare parts generally go to upgrading my dads system. Hes not exactly a family in need, but he is on a retirement budget so not much of a chance to upgrade himself.

After some thought and realizing I am becoming lazy in the idea of building another computer by hand I decided to scour Dell's Outlet for a while the past couple of days. I know, don't give me that... I cannot OC, etc...

A gem came up early this afternoon.: Q6600, 3G RAM, 2x 500G SATA2 HD, DVD-RW, 19 in 1 card reader, etc. for $429. Now I know I could probably build one for about this price, but again with a lot going on in my life right now and I wanted to replace the P4 Xeon sooner than later, it was time. Since it's a scratch and dent, it should be here this week.

So goodbye my old P4, and hello to my new C2Quad.

500 gig sata2 HD $89.99 each $179.98

DvD=RW (assume combo) $29.99

Sounds an excellent deal - it currently costs me a tad under £400 to build a Q6600, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, DVD-ROM, cheapest video.

All power to your shrubbers.

BTW, as I've been very disappointed with my Phenom 9500, I ordered a Phenom X4 9850 (Black edition) yesterday. From the reviews/comparisons I've seen it should be about on a par with a Q6700 (and it cost less than the 9500 did a few months back). Look out for a cheap 9500 on e-bay soon!! Laughing

I am donating the P4 Xeon to some family. It hasn't been determined what family yet. I had thought about selling it as it still is an awesome viable server, but alas my heart is in the giving mode.

Nothing wrong with being generous.

I tend to ride mine into the ground. I did use spare parts to build a box for my brother. Sold it to him for $100 and it served him well for a couple of years until he got a mac mini and now an imac. I just got an AMD quad core for a new gaming machine. The dual core became my linux file server and my old server (a 2800+) is eventually going to go into the living room as a mythTV box. The only unused computer I currently have is a P3 500MHz with 128MB of memory. I don't think it would be very appreciated, even as a gift Smile

I have donated machines to needy families , nothing like seeing the smiles and joy when you hit the power and the OS pops up for them in (more often than not) twice as fast as the old one. I also have a parts bin for friends and family.
