I have these 2 old boxes (cpu ~1G) running folding@home on winME, and I suspect that they could well be more productive with a different OS. I am reluctant to experiment without some advice

Suggestions please.

I would imagine that Ubuntu would be preferable, but I have zero experience in other OSs, and so I would need walking through an install from A to Z and probably assistance in finding drivers for the lan cards etc.

I have a good supply of old boxen from a local shop, and currently enough of a collection of assorted bits to build a 3rd.
