I found some interesting data when I was checking the load distribution on my UPS's.
All readings for FLA (Full Load Amps) taken with Boinc/Cosmology@home running 100%.
I expected the space heaters (P4 Prescotts) to be power hogs, but was surprised that my Mac Pro with 2 Intel Xeon 5150 (dual cores) takes just slightly more power than my AMD X2 6000+ (and quite a bit less than the Q6600).
Disclaimer: Readings taken with a Fluke 36 clamp-on amp probe, set to a 0-200 Amp scale (readings are a little "loose" down in these power ranges). _________________

Thanks, that's some interesting figures.
It pretty much confirms what you read about Intel vs. AMD these days. If you're getting a new CPU today, you should go Intel Core 2.
Then again, you probably shouldn't get a CPU today at all. The AMD Phenoms are released in only two weeks, and even if they're still no better than the Core 2, the price on Intels are sure to drop! |

Just in time for me to build a new machine! The CPU fan in my linux box just started groaning and slowing down... plus I need more hard drive space... so obviously its time for a new computer! |

My figures, taken a couple of weeks ago using a plug-in power meter:
As you can see, the power figures are very variable, so don't put too much faith in individual numbers. The RAM & video card also contribute quite a bit - as you can probably deduce from the above, I'm not into gaming.
I've used MFlops as the measure because RAC figures vary a lot, depending on projects being run. (My 3800s range from 500 to 1000).
If you're thinking about a Farm, pay particular attention to the last line!!!

Mini-farm math: 1.926 (KW) * 720 (Hrs/Mo) * 0.06 ($/KW/HR) = $83.20 /Mo or $998.40 /Year.
It's not a cheap hobby. Although I must admit to having more expensive vices that this.

Pray tell.
On second thoughts, I don't think I really want to know. _________________ Creationists believe they never evolved; I agree with them.

Do the math on $5.00 / day for beer! _________________

I suppose that's very similar to my wine bill, but don't ask about the malt whisky!
Those figures tend to put the electricity bill into perspective; it's just that utilities bill quarterly, whereas "consumption" is many small bills or just gets lost in the supermarket, so you don't see the annual total unless you really think about it. _________________ Creationists believe they never evolved; I agree with them.

I've often thought that if I got my bar bill once a month that I would probably freak-out and quit drinking. _________________

I know!
Apparently the Phenoms didn't only fail to meet expectations, they also performed so bad that Intel didn't even bother to lower their prices.
It is unfortunate that AMD can't keep up, because if you look at Intels pricing I think you get an idea of what's to expect when there's no competition.
I hope they'll get some better Phenoms out in Q1 2008. |

Maybe if we all sit around the camp fire and sing "45 nm" the AMD engineers will have a brilliant breakthrough! |
