I can't help much here either, Papa. (Being overweight, and a smoker myself )
The baby carrots, carrot sticks, celery seem like the way to go for healthy snacks. I guess you've got to cut right back on breads too, so how about rice cakes or corn cakes (do you have those in the U.S.?) topped with lettuce and a small can of flavoured tuna or a slice of fat reduced ham as an alternative to sandwiches or burgers for lunch.
For a sweet treat you might be able to have some low fat yoghurt or diabetic chocolate, but you'd probably better check with the doctor first. _________________ My brain hurts.

Well they mustn't be as good as the Aussie ones.
I'm not a big fan of them but they make a nice change from bread.
Maybe something like a thin Turkish or Lebanese bread rolled up with a filling of cooked chicken, tuna, or lean ham with salad would be okay too. _________________ My brain hurts.

Processed sugars are what will kill you, natural sugars are a whole lot better for you, just be careful on the amount you eat.
Bananas are the perfect fruit/food.
Good luck. _________________ Don't fuss about growing older, many are denied the chance. |

I am sorry to tell you that this is not enough to get me thru a 14 hour work day.
HELP.............. |
Ok I am actually on this silly diet. I will not debate if this diet is "safe" or not. I can only say that while on it I have lost 40 pounds and for me it is working. It is not for everyone and I am by no means suggesting it is the best.
Now as for what to eat for lunch. I personally eat a salad w/o tomatoes, crutons, or carrots. I add to my salad broccoli, cucumbers, cheese, bacon bits, and Alfalfa Sprouts.
There are some really basic rules that I follow while on this diet. My rules are a bit on the safe side and as a result they sometimes eliminate foods I could have. Nevertheless I exclude those foods too as it makes the rules easier to remember. Here are the rules:
1) No "root" vegetables (carrots, potatoes, etc...)
2) No foods that are white in the middle (potatoes, rice, etc...)
3) No foods that grow on a stalk (i.e. corn, oat, wheat)
4) No fruit
5) No sugar foods (i.e. desserts, candies, non-diet sodas)
and no foods that come from these...i.e. Pasta, bread, pop corn, etc...
Ok so what does that leave us with? Well mostly "green" vegetables (green beans, broccoli, cucumbers, cabbage, celery, spinach, etc...), all meats, most cheeses (beware milk it has 11 carbs a serving), etc... You can have tomatoes on a limited basis. So your salads do not have to be boring if you are willing to put "non-salad" items in to it (celery as an example).
As for drinks. You can have all diet sodas....on that note I highly recommend Diet Dr. Pepper and Coke Zero...they both taste really good and do not taste like a diet drink. Lipton also makes a Diet Green Tea...it does not taste like Tea so there is no funky after taste in your mouth...try it. You can have just about all alcohol...the only problem here is that unless you like the alcohol straight or with water, then you are out of luck as you can not have fruit or tomatoe juices to mix with it. You can have a light beer, however that is almost 5 carbs a beer so limit yourself to 1 or 2 a day MAX.
Celery is a great snack food as are sunflower seeds (when kept to 1 oz a day). If you have a way to keep it fresh, cubbed cheese can be a good mid-day snack also. If you MUST have fruits, you CAN have Apricots..but I personally do not like them (yuck). Beef jerky is a good snack food, just be careful and make sure you read the label. Sometimes they will load it up with sugars to make it taste better and you end up with a 40 carb snack
There are a slew of low-carb products that are produced by various companies, the trick is their availability in your area. They make everything from low-carb ice cream, to low-carb candy bars. The ice-cream is actually pretty good...the candy bars leave something to be desired.
If you do get on the low-carb wagon make sure you drink lots of liquid. If you do not your kidneys will begin to hurt. I find that this diet helps me drink more water than I was before, which in turn helps to keep me "full" and thus I eat less total food/calories.
This is not a long term diet though (in my opinion). Once I get to my target weight I will probably roll off of it on to something more maintainable. _________________

Wow.....
I forgot about this post
for some reason I don't get emails regarding posts anymore.
Anyway, I lost 14 lbs in the first month and I have stayed at the same weight now for a couple of months. I end up cheating alot but I do feel better. When I went to the doctor's office for follow up blood work he was almost dancing, he said that he could not believe that there was such a change in my levels.
So needless to say I have kinda let the diet slip a little but I still watch out for carbs. No potatoes very little bread and No McDonalds and the like. But I still smoke 2 packs a day. One thing at a time _________________ a.k.a. Licentious of Borg.........Resistance Really is Futile.......

If I may add my $.02, As a I am a Type II diabetic I currently live in the never ending hell of trying to limit my carbs. See if he will get you the info for the Diabetic Exchange Diet. It takes a bit to figure out but will give you a balanced set of meals (whether it is 3 a day or 6 a day) and help you limit your carbs. Something I use to help regulate my cholesterol is Fish Oil, flax seed oil, and garlic capsules taken with my daily doses of gemfibrozil (Lopid). |
