Well hello there, fellow looneys. Sorry I'm late. I've missed 3 birthdays so I'll deal with them in another thread, still haven't got the computer fixed - it's running with the side cover off and a big fan blowing into it. It appears to be working but only as a short term solution. No shrubbing for me at present, I'm sorry to say, but as soon as it's fixed BOINC will be up and running again. It may have to wait for another couple of weeks though.
I've got a contract on my house, so we've been pretty busy here and trying not to succumb to panic attacks because of the packing and all the other stuff that has to be organised. I don't really know if the buyers have their finance yet, but I'll know one way or the other next Tuesday. Hopefully, the contract will be unconditional then and we'll only have another two weeks here.
Plus I've been caught up playing the silly Pirate game on Facebook. It's so monotonous and boring but one of those things that suck you in. _________________ My brain hurts.

John, I'm a nervous bloody wreck! We were supposed to find out yesterday if the buyers have their finance, but they asked for a two day extension so now we won't know any more until tomorrow.
If all goes well we'll be moving in just under two weeks, if not we'll have to go through it all again....just sitting and waiting for another buyer for who knows how long.
All we can do is keep packing, trying to get organised and wait. The furniture removal guy is still waiting to hear from me, and I can't really arrange for a short-term rental place until we know what's happening. It's like being in limbo.
Anyway, one of the first thing I'll be doing when we finally get moved is get this computer fixed. I'm hoping it doesn't blow up or do something else silly beforehand.
Yep, I've been missing the silliness and looneys here too...and I've also been spending way too much time chucking pirate bombs on facebook. _________________ My brain hurts.

You should drink until tomorrow, that will help you pass time until then.
What is a pirate bomb?

Well, the buyers pulled out of the contract at the last minute. But, I now have another contract on the house for 5,000 more. It's a young couple this time - first home buyers - so I'm hoping this one will go through okay.
John - Are you on facebook? Add me as a friend if you are so that I can recruit you and bomb you for your booty. I had about 30 bombs and only 1 friend playing Pirates, so he copped quite a few. I decided to join the pirates addicts group and posted in the thread 'looking for people to bomb' thread and ended up with another 14 people on my friends list. Now I've run out of bombs and they're getting harder to find. The upside is you get more gold coins and the occasional level up, the downside is that you get bombed in return.

Sir Cracked, if Sir Farty Pants was a facebook pirate I wouldn't be runnin' away from him, I'd be bombing his *rse for booty too!
If this house contract goes through, I can get the computer fan fixed and start up the shrubbing again!!

Good luck with everything!
What is facebook? Is that like Myspace? I'm still not sure what the bombing is or how it is done. I must be too old and out of it. _________________ Fetch me the Holy Hand Grenade!

Thanks belenus and John. I've got a better feeling about this one.
John, I guess it's like Myspace but maybe of a higher calibre. I don't know much about Myspace so I'm basing my opinion on the little bit I've seen of it.
For the pirate bombing, you need to be playing the pirate game. You find bombs on the deserted islands or you find them when you're pillagin' a village. Then you can use them to toss at someone on your friend list who is also playing the pirate game so that you can steal their gold coins. You can't steal any of the buried coins. Buried coins can be dug up to purchase ship upgrades, tavern items, or used in combination with other items to buy a level-up.
Nobody knows what we're supposed to do with all our monkeys, parrots, swords, pistols etc, but the game is still in development so options will probably be added later. _________________ My brain hurts.

Sounds like fun. Send me a link please (I'm lazy - just ask my wife!) & instructions on how to get into it.
Just some more stuff to get in trouble with!

Facebook time-wasters could cost $5 billion a year

* Facebook could cost employers $5bn per year
* Risk of opening businesses to cyber criminals
* Related: Islamic group's YouTube propaganda
FACEBOOK, the latest global social networking craze, could cost employers up to $5 billion a year in productivity.
The rise of the "underground intranet" in workplaces has resulted in more time-wasting by employees.
It could also open businesses to cyber criminals and legal liability, analysis by internet security firm SurfControl Technology says.
The data found if one employee spent an hour a day of company time on Facebook, it could cost their employer more than $6200 a year.
Projected across the 800,000 businesses with one or more employees in Australia, this one wasted hour a day equalled productivity losses of more than $5 billion a year.
100 joining per hour
There are more than 230,000 Facebook users across the country, with reportedly more than 100 Australians joining the phenomenon each hour.
With many users logging on during work hours, productivity loss was not the only drawback, SurfControl chairman Richard Cullen said.
"Hackers will no doubt be targeting Facebook as an attack mechanism because of (its) popularity and power as a platform," Dr Cullen said.
"It's only a matter of time before a security loophole is discovered and exploited."
'Blanket bans'
Many companies were placing blanket bans on the site, created by then 19-year-old Harvard College dropout Mark Zuckerberg in 2004.
But account director Tammy Tucker from marketing communications agency Haystac, whose employees were connected to Facebook, said the phenomena had reshaped the media landscape and was now regarded as a powerful business tool.
"It's important for a marketing communications agency to be on the pulse with new and emerging social media platforms such as Facebook, MySpace, YouTube and Second Life," Ms Tucker said.
"Social networking sites like Facebook enable us to connect with our clients, media representatives and our 40 plus staff in our Sydney and Melbourne offices."
'Boon for business'
Despite Facebook's negative side, Dr Cullen said it could also be a boon for business.
"A lot of enlightened employers are encouraging socialising as part of the working experience because it makes people want to be at work longer," he said.
"There needs to be awareness and education on the part of the employer as to what is the appropriate level of use." |
