This is an alpha project that some of us (8 so far) have been running. I just received a go-ahead to recruit new members. KWSN is currently 10th in their team standings.

Cosmology@Home

===========================================
From website:
The goal of Cosmology@Home is to search for the model that best describes our Universe and to find the range of models that agree with the available astronomical and particle physics data. In order to achieve this goal, participants in Cosmology@Home (i.e. you!) will compute the observable predictions of millions of theoretical models with different parameter combinations. We will use the results of your computations to compare all the available data with these models. In addition, the results from Cosmology@Home can help design future cosmological observations and experiments, and prepare for the analysis of future data sets, e.g. from the Planck spacecraft.

Each work package simulates a Universe with a particular geometry, particle content, and "physics of the beginning." It produces predictions of the observable properties of the Universe which we can then compare to:

1) the fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background (observed from space by the WMAP and soon the Planck spacecraft, as well as from ground based and balloon based experiments),
2) the large scale distribution of galaxies and clusters of galaxies,
3) measurements of the current expansion speed of the Universe by the Hubble space telescope,
4) the acceleration of the Universe as measured by observations of supernova explosions,
5) observations of primordial element abundances in distant gas clumps, and
6) gravitational lensing data, when it becomes available.

At this point the project is in the testing and developing phase and has not yet been launched officially. In fact there are no links to this page other than those created by people who found our test implementation looking for BOINC projects on the central server or using search engines such as Google.

===========================================
From Project Leader:
You are very welcome to join as an alpha tester, but we ask for your understanding that we are still in the early testing stages. You can have a look at the message boards to get more information about the state of the project.

If you are willing to tolerate some bugs as we are getting ready for beta testing you are welcome to join at this early stage. Just go to

===========================================
From me:
This is currently a closed, invitation only alpha project. As they do not
want the sign-up codes posted on the web, please PM me and I will send
you the sign-up instructions.

===========================================
Note to all : The progress indicator on Cosmo does not work yet (app is written in Fortran 90, running within a c (Boinc Client) wrapper). They are
working on trying to get the indicator working, but it is difficult to get Fortran and c shared memory areas to talk properly.
As it is the task executes fine and checkpoints, but
1) Does not drive the "progress" (%) indicator.
2) Does not inform the Boinc Manager that it has check-pointed. (May cause Boinc long-term debt build up).
3) Fixed credit, 60 credits/WU.

Ok, question time.....why does one of mu WUs for Cosmology have 2:45 of CPU time and 0.0% progress? Confused

Because the app isn't reporting progress. Depending on how the app works, it may not report progress until it checkpoints, it may not report progress until it finishes.

The current app is written in Fortran 90, which does not interface well with Boinc. So they have a "wrapper" task with communicates with Boinc and runs the science app. They haven't figured out how to make the app talk to the wrapper yet, so although the science app checkpoints 20 times during a run, it is not reported back to Boinc. Also the progress indicator is not updated for the same reason. Scott is working on it.
PS- both tasks running on your P4-D complete; one in 11,153, claimed 22.8, granted 60.0; the second in 6,064, claimed 12.4, pending wingman's completion will get 60.0. Task on your P4 3.2 has not finished.

Ok, thanks. I saw that the other PC had finished 2 WUs & was wondering why this one was doing what it was.

Yes - sort of, PM OhioMike and he will send you the sign up info. The WU's are around 4+ hours each and you get 60 shrubs per.

We should keep it secret from the rest of the shrubbing world, but only have the KWSN know about it.

We better hire someone else and play a basketball match. No idea about baseball (yes, I know it's a major sport in the US, but haven't seen a whole match never and have no idea a bout the rules). I wonder why European and American taste for sports is so different. Well, we both enjoy tennis, I think. Wink

I know baseball has a following in Latin America and in Asia (they both have leagues there).
