Ok, this may seem to be a newbie question but hey, I am a newbie to the Knights. I need your opinions.....With only one machine at my disposal, is it better to focus on just one or two shrubs or stick with the 8 that I am currently running? Also, what are the advantages and disadvantages of both?

Thanks in advance.

I only have one computer as well and I average about 10 projects at a time. One of the advantages is that you can participate in many different projects if you can not decide just on 2 or 3. But a disadvantage is that your RAC will be a bit affected for each project if you are in to many of them. But it is entirely up to you and which project or projects you want to support.

RAC = Recent Average Credit. It's a rolling weighted average, I think over 60 days (I used to think 30 but it takes longer to zero, so maybe it's even longer like 90). Anywho, once you have been doing a project or projects steadily for awhile, your RAC will be a useful gauge as to how much work you are producing relative to someone else.

I think 8 is too many, personally, because it means you're doing a LOT of swapping on projects. Every time a project is stopped it has to be unloaded, and the next project loaded. For some projects, you will lose work every time you do this, because they only (draws a blank on the term)... err... I forget the official term, but the projects only "save" their state every so often. If you exit the client, swap projects, lose power, etc you lose everything you've done since the last "save". It's more noticeable with some projects than others, but they will all exhibit this loss to some degree (granted, it may only be a very small amount). *Update: Now that I think about it, I think the failsafe for this is built into the manager, but I could be wrong. What I mean is, I think the manager will wait until the next time the project "saves" itself before swapping it out once it's timer expires (i.e. time to swap to the next project).

My suggestion is to win the lotto and buy a BlueGene/L, then you can put 10,000 CPUs on every BOINC project. Oh, and tell me your username or CPID and I'll help you setup a spiffy sig with stats in it. (Yes, I am a stats whore.) *Update: I forgot the other alternative, which is to start borging all of your families, neighbors, and/or work computers.

After taking JerWA's info into consideration, I will throttle it back to 4 shrubs for now to see the difference. I know that some may wanna know what shrubs I will be keeping so here's a list:

Rosetta-Cuz I like the project.
Einstein-Cuz I R a stat ho in training.
SETI-Again, Cuz I R a stat ho in training.
uFluids-Cuz I like the project.

I'm joined up on quite a few projects.. well actually 24 projects on 1 dual core, but I don't run all of them at once. I only run at the most 3 or 4 at once. Generally a couple projects that hardly hand out work and 2 that always have work. This is just what i run BOINC-wise.. other than BOINC i also run another at least another 13. Does this make me a certified or needing a rubber room and a straight jacket? #ni-1 And just to think this all started with 118 shrubs of Classic SETI.
