Guess that's why I claim International affiliation ... soccer and rugby were always more interesting to me than NFL, though lacrosse and hockey did interest me for a while ... And Formula 1 took precedence over Nascar, still does ... Regattas and tennis ... Cricket over baseball ... guess I really am a Dork _________________ Klaatu... verata... n... Necktie. Nectar. When the Colts got moved to Indianapolis I lost interest ... I did like the O's for a while, but got mugged in broad daylight walking to a game at the old Memorial Stadium when I was about 8 and that took a lot of the fun out of it for me.
On the other hand, Johns Hopkins LaCrosse was 'da bomb' (American slang for 'enjoyable')!

OH you colonials and your strange sports! Give me a game that takes five days, has breaks for lunch, tea, stops if it rains (as if it ever rains here, mind you what with global warming....but I digress) and after that may not have a winner anyway.
Cricket: As explained to a foreigner...
You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game.
Although intended to be comical and being very difficult to understand, this is an entirely correct explanation of Cricket
I say vicar do have another crumpet.......

CRICKET!! boring...
I was born in 1988, and I'll have you know, that I have only once had popcorn from the microwave, always think about jaws when I'm at the beach, I know mork was with mindy although where he came from is a mystery (saw the repeats when I was VERY young), McDonalds was still using styrofoam until I was at least 10, and I can use a typewriter if I'm pushed... although my generation cannot survive witout spelcheker...
I also know vinyl, vhs, and a time before the microwave, or my life revolving around my laptop and the internet. Were any if you around before lightbulbs...? Some of you must be over 30 right? _________________ Money can't buy happiness, but it lets you be miserable in comfort. |

A truer tally of the sticky wicket of Cricket I've never seen ... and it truly is more fun to watch than baseball ... and more international, I dare say ... even colonials play in many regions ... it's not as indulgent as the Native American LaCrosse, but worthy indeed _________________ Klaatu... verata... n... Back with you all, just been trimming my wicks!
I have actually witnessed a game of cricket being played in Central Park New York, BY COLONIALS NO LESS!!!!
They did seem to know how to play as well.
Baseball is played here too (the game is called Rounders), by school girls 'cause its a game for softies who cant't hit a ball.
Runs away and hides a long way away from Mohrorless _________________

I was born in 1976. I knew someone with a working 8" floppy drive (yeah, yeah, I know it's begging for a bad joke), actually owned some 8 tracks but they weren't new (I "inherited" them), learned BASIC with some program that all I remember about was a turtle, used a computer that used cassette tapes for storage and the keyboard was the entire computer, owned several Ataris, had to use 3rd party software to make use of my 1 MB of RAM, had a 20MB MFM hard drive that was the width of a 5 1/4" drive bay and 2 full bays tall (it must have weighed half a pound per MB), paid $800 for an 800 MB hard drive at wholesale prices, bought the first 14.4kbps modem the very day it hit the market for $249, paid $51 per MB for the 32MB of RAM in my 486/100 because the main chip factory somewhere had burned down, remember how cool the ZModem protocol was because it let you watch image files download line by line so you could abort them partway through if they weren't what you wanted, was a member of FidoNet and had 11,000 messages a day on my 4-line BBS that started with 1 line and text only display on my 8086, and actually worked with betamax equipment (which was far superior to VHS, which is why when beta dissapeared from the consumer market it was the only thing used in professional broadcasting).
I don't really feel old yet, but I'm glad technology is advancing as fast as it is. _________________

Keep running squeaky penquin, you will be caught . As for Rounder it is similar to baseball, but it is closer to softball:
Wikipedia wrote: | The GAA version of the game is very similar to softball. The chief difference is that the game is played with a baseball-sized bats, balls and field. However, baseball-style gloves are not allowed.
The chief differences between baseball and the NRA version of the game are that:
the bat is much shorter and is usually swung one-handed
misses/strikes aren't called, so there are no walks or strike-outs - each batter receives only one good ball and must run whether they hit it or not
posts (which should be wooden, preferably encased in plastic sheaths) mark the bases
the lay-out of the pitch is different, especially the location of home base
Under both versions of the game bowlers pitch with an underarm pendulum action as in softball, as distinct from baseball.
(Wikipedia Entry)

ouch , stop I'm running......ouch I surrender.............
Basket ball/net ball...another girlie game
and as for hockey....more girls
Actually went to see a baseball game in Baltimore. Orioles against?????
Great atmosphere, not a clue as to what was going on. One pitch looks just like another, lots of cheering , beer, more pitching, more cheering, some running, shouting by the coaches. Go home.
Now rugby thats a real game................... _________________

Field.
Though we did win Olympic Gold for men's Field Hockey about 14 years ago. It really is a game taught mainly to girls in school, as is netball.
Basket ball has never really taken off here. Saw the Bulls once in Chicago, couldn't understand why it's so popular?
As for ice hockey, don't you have to be Canadian to dress up in armour and beat the S%*t out of eah other with large sticks? _________________

I wouldn't brag about that, especially if I was making fun of it.

It's big here because the only equipment you need is a ball and the local park with a hoop. Easier for kids to play if there isn't enough room for a field for baseball.

Being Canadian is no longer a requirement. However I am surprised that those sticks don't get used for that purpose more often, if I played I know I would.... _________________ Fetch me the Holy Hand Grenade!

OK
I do watch the super bowl each year, even if it is on at 2.00 in the morning, so, as none of the previous comments were of a serious nature, sporting abuse has now finished and I have gone back to tending the shrubs. _________________

Believing this thread to be basically about againg. I make the following observations.
I was born in 1951, and can remember a time before color television. I am that oft-maligned species, the baby boomer.
I can remember when everyone liked Ike. I remember Ike.
When I was around five years old, I remember talking to the elderly woman who lived next door, who I learned years later had been in utero on the day that Lee surrendered at Appomatox, and when Lincoln was shot in Ford's theater several days later. I can remember reading about elderly former slaves who had been infants when the slaves were freed here in America. I can remember reading in our local newpaper that the last Civil War veteran had died.
People who had been alive during the latter part of the nineteeth century were a dime a dozen. When my first grade teacher was a little girl, there were prairie schooners going across the western part of the United States, and Indian wars still going on.
My mother was born roughly at the time that Pancho Villa made raids across the border into the United States. When she was a little girl, there were no 64 bit dual core Cpus. Consumer electronics was a chrystal set, if you had one. My mother lived simultaneously with both Wyatt Earp and Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, and survived them both. She died a couple of years ago.
My teen=aged son went to Europe a couple of years ago, and visited a Nazi concentration camp. He got a chance to talk to an actual concentration camp survivor. Someday, he will undoubtedly generate verbiage about it similar to the verbiage that I am generating here.
Blah-blah=blah. I'll shut up now. |
