Yeah, that is the bandwidth graph for all of campus. As hard as they try to shut down P2P filesharing, some of it still gets through which probably accounts for a fair amount of the outgoing traffic. There are also a lot of webservers on campus and we have a pretty strong distance education program that uses streaming video and other such things. We were actually trying to do some traffic analysis before Christmas break. Right now we are busy with other things but we may do some more in a few weeks.

After some experimenting, I've found out why MJ12 won't max my connection. MJ12 won't demand enough resources while BOINC is running (or BOINC just won't give them up hehe). With BOINC, MJ12node runs between 0 and 1% CPU time, without BOINC it hovers between 10 and 15%. So, in an effort to make my ISP hate me, I've installed MJ12node on another client on my network that will run only at night to see if I can bring it closer to capacity.

My record right now is around 2,000kbps according to MJ12's stats. There's only 3 hours left for tonights run, but I should be able to see if it's going to crawl faster than before or not.

Did you try increasing the crawling (and other) priorities in MJ-12 ?

Yes, and everything in BOINC is on the very lowest priority. Doesn't seem to matter, the only thing in MJ12 that ever goes above 1% (while BOINC is running) is archiving.

It's very interesting, but MJ12 runs very well in 1% CPU time. So well, in fact, that getting 1% on two machines gives me the same result as using 10-15% on one machine. I only got up to 1960 kbps last night, but I think there are torrents on the network fighting me for bandwidth (downfall of multiple users). We'll find out tonight when MJ12node wakes up on that machine again hehe. Mine will continue to putter at it throughout the day, but capped at only 1024.

So apparently we just tried to stage a coup or something... Is someone trying to take over the world again? Apparently they detected the hostile action and corrected it as everything was back to normal a minute later when I refreshed the page.

That's right, run away. It'll be less painful if you close your eyes and imagine you're somewhere peaceful, rather than being pursued by a raving pack of loonies.

I have not noticed any conflict with boinc. However I have noticed that if you have too many workers it will run slower. I started with 25 and eventually went to 100. 100 made it crash and restart about every 20 min. I now have it set at 45 workers and it runs about 500k. My son's comp is using 35 workers and he runs about a million a day. His connection is Much faster than mine even though both are comcast. He is about 1 mile from their HQ while I am about 10 miles away. I also set it to max out after comp is idle for 1 min. I was running 2 comps on one line ( lan & router ) but I find that one is faster than both together with less errors.

I'm running a really small amount of workers. 1024k cap on bandwidth and 15 workers during the day, and 2048k cap and 30 workers at night. I started having a lot of stability issues and after reading the forums switched to the MJ12 http library. The change was immediate and very positive, with usage becoming much more predictable and linear, as well as hovering much closer to cap. Before, on the .NET library, usage would spike to 2-3x my limit, and then bounce way down to 0, then back up, etc in kind've a yo-yo. Now it's only bouncing a few hundred k above/below the cap and my over all usage is within 50k of the setting, and uploads seem to be sending more reliably as well though that may just be coincidence.

That said, I'm going to let it run on both machines again tonight to see how it does, and may try dropping the 2nd machine and just bumping things up on this one again.

Edit: I bumped my day profile workers to 20 and my night to 40. It seems, on the day profile (1024k cap), to have narrowed the margin of bandwidth usage so that it stays much closer to cap all the time.

I think what tends to happen with too many workers is that buckets get down to the last couple hundred URLs really quickly and then slow way down since they are only crawling one or two slow domains. Since it has excess capacity it starts more buckets and those get down to the last hundred before the first ones are done and they all pile up until it maxes out the number of open buckets and things grind to a halt until buckets start finishing up and being replaced with new ones at which point it peaks back up to the cap. Rinse, repeat.

Haven't had that problem yet. 10 max open buckets, 5 reserved at a time, I've never seen it get above 5 open (or hit starvation with only 5 reserved). It play it pretty close to the vest, but maybe that's because I've got workers set fairly low.

By the way He is Lying. We are still crunching just a little less than 3 times their rate and they have not slowed down.
