Hmmer application starting tomorrow: The similarity matrix of the SIMAP project is currently up-to-date. Due to the power of BOINCSIMAP we could finish the calculations for all expansions and updates until now. Even several old parts of SIMAP (calculated in the pre-BOINC time with an older FASTA containing some bugs) could be re-calculated to ensure data correctness. Now we are about to launch a new part of the project which searches for domains within proteins. Protein domain predictions are necessary to infer functional and structural properties of proteins and are therefore of highest importance for computational biology. We plan to pre-calculate protein domains for all proteins in SIMAP and to keep this database up-to-date. The new hmmer application performs the necessary calculations based on "Hidden Markov Models" (HMMs). This application has been tested intensively during the last 6 months. Recently we have tested it online in this BOINC project using test workunits. All tests went fine, so we will start to distribute production workunits for hmmer tomorrow.
