I suppose it must be a very well-paid job. Anyway, I would not apply for it. _________________

Indeed!
If anyone should pay, shouldn't it be the rhinos? |

Here is a partial answer for you:
http://improbable.com/2007/10/12/letter-from-a-happy-man/
The Improbable Research motto is "Research that makes people LAUGH and then THINK". In this case the THINK is that there is a lot of unpleasant, difficult, and sometimes (at least when rhinos are involved) dangerous work that goes into saving an endangered species. I further suggest that collecting sperm from a rhino is only funny for someone that doesn't actually have to do it (but then it's fairly hilarious).
As to how much of your tax $$ are going to this, this is being done by a non-profit group:
SOS Rhino wrote: | SOS Rhino research programs have been funded by the MacArthur Foundation, the Institute of Museum Services, the Milwaukee County Zoo and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife. Our researchers are consultants for zoos, institutions and governments in the United States and around the world, including such countries as Malaysia, Indonesia, Nepal, India, and Australia.
[AND]
Our current projects include the support of over $US250,000 of grants by rhino researchers the world over |
So your tax $$ are coming in through the US Fish and Wildlife support, which would be some portion of $US250,000. That's not much as far as grants go. |
